The University of Delaware (also called UD or UDel ) is a state university in Newark in the north of the US state of Delaware . With 19,077 students enrolled, it is the largest college in Delaware. In addition to the main Newark campus, there are branch offices in Dover , Georgetown , Lewes and Wilmington . The University of Delaware is one of the best state universities in the USA , a so-called Public Ivy . She is particularly known for her research and teaching in the fields of biochemistry, chemistry, and chemical engineering.

history

The university was opened in 1743 by the Presbyterian pastor Francis Alison under the name Free School . In 1833 the school was recognized as a college under the name Newark College by the State of Delaware and finally renamed Delaware College in 1843 . After the merger with the Delaware Women's College, which was founded in 1913, in 1921 today's university emerged.

University sports

The UD sports teams are called the Fightin 'Blue Hens . The college is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association .
