Ralph E. Kleinman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ralph Ellis Kleinman (born July 27, 1929 in the Bronx , New York City , † February 23, 1998 in Newark , Delaware ) was an American mathematician .

Life

Ralph E. Kleinman grew up in Lindenhurst on the south coast of Long Island and in Forest Hills in Queens, New York . He studied mathematics at New York University and the University of Michigan in the late 1940s ; he received his Master of Arts in 1951. After his military service and a few years at the Radiation Laboratory of the University of Michigan, he received a Fulbright scholarship and went to the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands , where he received his doctorate in 1961. After his return he worked again at the Radiation Laboratory in Michigan, where he dealt with the mathematical description of scattering processes and the propagation of waves . In 1968 he went to Newark at the University of Delaware , where he later became Professor of Mathematical Sciences and in 1988 founded the Center for the Mathematics of Waves , of which he was director until his death.

The main focus of Kleinman's work was the application of integral equations to scattering processes and wave propagation and related inverse problems . The work with Peter van den Berg from the Technical University of Delft on inverse scattering problems and the reconstruction method of the Modified Gradient Technique that they developed should be emphasized .
