Lewes is a small town in Sussex County in the US state of Delaware , United States , with a population of 2,747 (as of 2010 ). The city is located on the Delmarva Peninsula . The population density is 309 inhabitants per square kilometer. As the oldest settlement of European immigrants in Delaware, the city was founded by Dutch colonists in 1631 . In the beginning the young settlement was called Zwaanendael ("Valley of the Swans"). The first settlement in the first of the original 13 US states, the Constitution of the United States recognized, Lewes is proud of the nickname "The First Town in the First State" ( The first town in the first state ). The conclusion that can be drawn from this that Lewes is thus also the oldest city within the 13 original states, is a fallacy. The urban area has a size of 11.1 km².

From Lewes there is a ferry connection over the Delaware to Cape May , the southernmost city in New Jersey .
