Career
After an outstanding basketball career in high school , Delle Donne first accepted a scholarship in 2008 at the University of Connecticut, which is renowned for its basketball program . After only a few days, however, she returned to her native Delaware for personal reasons and began studying at the University of Delaware , for whose volleyball team she played. It was not until the following year that Delle Donne took part in basketball games again. Although she was diagnosed with the infectious disease Lyme disease in 2010 , she scored more than 3000 points in her NCAA career, which only eight other players had achieved before her. In addition, she won the gold medal in the US selection at the 2011 Universiade .
At the 2013 WNBA Draft , Delle Donne was selected 2nd by the Chicago Sky . As the first league newcomer ever, she received the most votes from the fans in the election for the WNBA All-Star Game . At the end of the season, Delle Donne was unanimously voted WNBA Rookie of the Year . While the Sky had never reached the play-offs before, this time they were first in the Eastern Conference , but then eliminated in the first round. In the 2014 season, she had to take a longer break from competition due to her Lyme disease. Towards the end of the season, however, she intervened again in the game and scored in the decisive game of the first play-off round against the top seeded Atlanta Dream 34 points, including the game-winning throw. In the further course of the play-offs impaired by a back injury, she reached the final series with the Sky, but where Chicago was inferior to the Phoenix Mercury . In 2015 Delle Donne was awarded the WNBA Most Valuable Player Award , but lost to the Indiana Fever with Chicago in the first round of the play-offs . At the 2016 Olympic Games , she won the title with the US selection .
