Sheryl Denise Swoopes (born March 25, 1971 in Brownfield , Texas , United States ) is a former professional basketball player . She celebrated her greatest successes with the Houston Comets in the Women's National Basketball Association and the US national team .

Career

Sheryl Swoopes played in the WNBA for a long time with the Houston Comets and only moved to another club late. With the team from Houston, she was able to win four WNBA championships and also win many individual awards, including three times the MVP award of the WNBA.

She was chosen for her achievements in the WNBA both in 2006 in the WNBA All-Decade Team consisting of ten players and in 2011 for the 15th anniversary of the league as one of the WNBA's Top 15 Players of All Time . In 2016 she was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .

National team

She won the Olympic gold medal three times with the American women's basketball team (1996, 2000 and 2004) and the 2002 World Basketball Championship.

Others

In 1993 she was honored with the Associated Press Athlete of the Year award .

Swoopes is the first woman in basketball after whom a sports shoe from the sporting goods manufacturer Nike was named: "Air Swoopes".

Swoopes is openly gay.
