Sylvia Shaqueria Fowles (born October 6, 1985 in Miami , Florida , United States ) is a professional basketball player. She currently plays for the Minnesota Lynx in the Women's National Basketball Association .
Career
college
Sylvia Fowles played from 2005 to 2008 for the LSU Lady Tigers , the women's basketball team at Louisiana State University . In all four seasons, she led the Lady Tigers into the Final Four of the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship . During her time in college, she received a variety of awards.
On January 21, 2007, she became the sixth player to dunk a US college game .
Women's National Basketball Association
Sylvia Fowles was selected second in the 2008 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky. The 2008 season was her first season in the WNBA. From the beginning she was one of the pillars of the team and was regularly in the team's starting lineup. In Chicago she had to wait a long time for team success. It wasn't until 2013 that she reached the playoffs with the team for the first time. In her last season in 2014 for the Sky, she reached the WNBA finals with the team, which were clearly lost to the Phoenix Mercury . During her time in Chicago, she received the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Award twice ( 2011 and 2013 ) and was the league's best rebounder in the 2013 season.
In 2015 Fowles moved to the Minnesota Lynx , with whom she won the WNBA championship straight away. She herself received the WNBA Finals MVP Award for her performance in the final series against the Indiana Fever . In 2016 , she lost with the Lynx team to the Los Angeles Sparks . For the third time she was named the best defensive player in the league.
The 2017 season was a very successful one for Fowles. She won the Lxyn for the second time the WNBA championship, she was also voted the best player of the season as well as the best player of the final series . In 2018 she was able to build on the performances of previous years and even became the best rebounder in the league for the second time after 2013, but with the Lynx she failed for the first time early in the playoffs after a weaker regular season.
Europe
Like many WNBA players, Fowles regularly plays in Europe during the WNBA season break. Since 2009 she has been on the field for the Russian team from Spartak Moskowskaja Oblast and the Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul .
National team
In 2008 , 2012 and 2016 she won gold medals three times with the US national basketball team at the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing , London and Rio de Janeiro . At the 2010 Women's Basketball World Cup , she was part of the US World Championship team.
