Christopher Robert "Chris" McNeill (born November 20, 1954 in Pueblo , Colorado , † February 5, 2011 in Steamboat Springs ) was an American ski jumper .

Career

McNeill, who grew up in Steamboat Springs, was American Junior Champion in 1972 and was accepted into the US national team a short time later. In the Four Hills Tournament 1972/73 he reached 79th place in the opening competition in Oberstdorf . He achieved the best individual result of the tour with rank 58 in Innsbruck . In the overall standings, he landed on 77th place. In the Four Hills Tournament 1975/76 he was able to improve slightly, so that he completed the tour as 68th. He got a starting place for the 1976 Winter Olympics , but was not used as a substitute.

McNeill began his most successful Four Hills Tournament in 1976/77 with rank 40 on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf, which was subsequently the best individual result in a Four Hills Tournament. In the other competitions he could not build on that and finished the tour in 42nd place overall.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1978 , he started in all three jumping competitions. From the normal hill, McNeill landed in 33rd place after jumps on 75 and 77 meters. From the large hill he landed at 79 and 89.5 meters and thus reached 49th place. Together with Jeff Denney , Jeff Davis and Jim Denney , he finished 10th and last place in team jumping .

At the 1979 Olympic dress rehearsal in Lake Placid , he won the normal hill. He also finished third in the US championships shortly thereafter.

On December 30, 1979 McNeill gave his debut in the ski jumping World Cup as part of the Four Hills Tournament 1979/80 . However, he was only on the lower ranks in all jumping classes. At the 1980 Winter Olympics , he went to the start anyway. In his last international competition, he only jumped from the normal hill and achieved 23rd place.

After his active career, McNeill worked as a trainer and in 1986 got a job at Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. He did this until his death on February 5, 2011. McNeill died unexpectedly of a pulmonary embolism on his way to the hospital during the Winter Carnival Street Festival in Steamboat Springs after his brother-in-law called an ambulance due to McNeill's poor health.
