The 32nd Nordic World Ski Championships took place in the Finnish city of Lahti from February 18 to 26, 1978 , for the fourth time after 1926, 1938 and 1958.

A new addition to the program was the women's 20 km cross-country skiing. The women now had the same number of cross-country disciplines as the men. Only the route lengths were different.

The medal table was more balanced than in some previous World Cups. The leaders were the Soviet Union , Finland and the GDR with three gold medals each and numerous other medals each. Norway disappointed with only two bronze medals.

Nomination from Lahti

This took place at the end of May 1975 at the 30th FIS Congress in San Francisco .

other remarks

  • The FIS board, which met here in Lahti, set the first signs that after 1982 the other world championships (both alpine and nordic) should be held in odd years and thus separately from the Winter Olympics. The exact decisions were to be taken in 1979 at the FIS Congress in Nice .
  • There were financial problems because of the television broadcast. The Finnish government stepped in with a subsidy, and the organizers also took some advertising posters off the slopes, which also met the requirements of the European Broadcasting Corporation .
  • There was a spelling mistake on the white pointed hats with which the ÖSV starters appeared: The organizer's location was sewn on incorrectly: instead of “Lahti” it was called “Lathi”.

Team jumping (unofficial)

Date: February 22, 1978

For the first time, a team competition in ski jumping was held at the Nordic World Ski Championships. This served as a demonstration competition for the team competition on the large hill, which was introduced at world championships from 1982. Due to the unofficial nature of the competition, no medals were awarded.

Date: February 19-20, 1978

The superiority of the athletes from the GDR was striking. All four starters made it into the top five. Only the Finn Rauno Miettinen, who had led after jumping, was able to penetrate the GDR phalanx in second place. Double Olympic champion Ulrich Wehling had to be content with bronze. He was then two years later at the Olympic Games in Lake Placid with his third Olympic victory in a row again.
