The 28th Nordic World Ski Championships took place from February 14 to 22, 1970 in Štrbské Pleso in Czechoslovakia , for the second time since 1935.

The award to the then Vysoké Tatry took place at the 26th FIS Congress in May 1967 in Beirut . According to the official bulletin Vysoké Tatry received 41 votes, Garmisch-Partenkirchen 21, Banff 9 and Falun one vote (although the Swedes withdrew their application before the vote and postponed it to 1974).

On Saturday, February 14th, the Swiss FIS President Marc Hodler opened the World Championships in front of around 50,000 spectators. He gave his speech in six languages, most recently even in Slovak, which earned him minutes of applause. The President of the Czechoslovak Republic, Ludvík Svoboda, took part in the ceremony. When the teams marched in, Walter Demel carried the West German flag.

In the medal table, the Soviet Union was far ahead of all other nations. This was mainly due to the dominance of the Soviet women in cross-country skiing disciplines, who had been superior in recent years. Particularly outstanding was the double victory of the Soviet ski jumper Gari Napalkow , who repeated what Bjørn Wirkola had achieved as the first jumper ever at the 1966 World Cup . Otherwise, the medals table again showed a few nations beyond the Scandinavians and Soviet athletes. The Norwegians were very disappointing, they had to be content with one silver and two bronze medals.

At the first handover, Norway was one second ahead of the Soviet Union, after 20 km the Soviet Union was already in the lead (ahead of Sweden, Norway and the GDR). In the third section there was a sensational advance by Grimmer, who was the first to hand over to Klause. Wedenin was only able to overtake Klause in the final phase.
For the Austrian relay, starting runner Wallner was in 9th place at the first change, Farbmacher and Pühringer fell back to 13th place, last runner Janc was able to move up one place, although he was hindered by undisciplined spectators.
There were 15 seasons at the start.

The jumping was carried out on the MS 1970 A.

Napalkow was only 13th with 91 m, after that he risked everything and set a new hill record with 109.5 m (previously Raška with 107.5 m). After the trial run, the URS trainer and also Ewald Roscher, the trainer of Switzerland, managed to shorten the approach due to the large distances, but the wind that was responsible for it suddenly subsided.
