The 41st Nordic World Ski Championships were held from February 21st to March 1st, 1997 in the Norwegian city of Trondheim .
As at the last World Cup in Thunder Bay, the most successful nation was the team from Russia with six World Cup titles this time. Host country Norway followed with four gold medals and Finland with three gold medals.
Russia's cross-country skier Jelena Välbe stood out in particular , who managed to clear all five world championships that were possible. The Italian Stefania Belmondo finished second in all four individual races . The Norwegian Bjørn Dæhlie was also very successful again with two individual wins and the relay gold medal. Janne Ahonen won two world titles in ski jumping. He won on the normal hill in front of the Japanese Masahiko Harada and also won team gold from the large hill with his Finnish team. Harada won the competition on the large hill and also won silver in team jumping.
Surcharge
The award took place on June 12, 1992 at the 38th FIS Congress in Budapest .
