Masashi Abe (born August 13, 1965 in Obira , Hokkaidō Prefecture ) is a former Japanese Nordic combined athlete . He took the 1994 Japan at the Winter Olympics in part.

Career

On February 27, 1987 he made his debut for Japan in the Nordic Combined World Cup . At the World Cup in Lathi , he finished seventh in his first race. He finished the season with a total of 19 points in 20th place.

On January 12, 1991 he was in the top five for the first time. At the World Cup in Bad Goisern he just missed the podium with fourth place behind Klaus Sulzenbacher , Hippolyt Kempf and Fred Børre Lundberg . In 1991 he took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships for the first time . At the team competition of the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991 , he finished third behind Austria and France together with Reiichi Mikata and Kazuoko Kodama . He took his first podium on March 23, 1991 in St. Moritz . Behind Klaus Sulzenbacher and in front of Trond Einar Elden he jumped and ran into second place. He finished the season in seventh place in the overall World Cup with a total of 54 points.

The 1992/93 season was his most successful season. On December 19, 1992, with third place at the World Cup in St. Moritz, he was able to take another podium place. On January 8, 1993, he finished third behind the Norwegian Fred Børre Lundberg and in front of his compatriot Kenji Ogiwara . He was allowed to start at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1993 in the Swedish city of Falun . After he missed his first individual medal in the individual competition with sixth place, he was able to win the team competition at a Nordic World Ski Championships for the first time for Japan together with Takanori Kōno and Kenji Ogiwara. After the World Ski Championships, he finished third at the World Cup in Lahti, his last podium finish. At the end of the season he finished fourth in the overall World Cup with a total of 94 points.

He qualified for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, and was nominated for the Olympic Games by the Japanese Olympic Committee . After he had finished tenth in the individual, he was together with Takanori Kōno and Kenji Ogiwara Olympic champion in the team competition before Norway and Switzerland. This made Japan the first nation to defend its Olympic victory in the team.

After Japan had won all major team competitions since 1992, they were also the top favorite at the 1995 Nordic World Ski Championships in Thunder Bay, Canada . This time the team consisted not only of three athletes, but of four athletes. Nevertheless, he was able to secure the world title again together with Tsugiharu Ogiwara , Kenji Ogiwara , Takanori Kōno .
