Jaakko Tapio Tallus (born February 23, 1981 in Lieksa ) is a former Finnish Nordic combined skier .

Career

First years

Tallus, who started for the Lieksan Hiihtoseura club , began skiing at the age of four with the support of his father, who also skied. At the age of seven he started ski jumping in his hometown Lieksa. From 1991 he gained his first successes at regional championships. In 1997 he made his debut in the B World Cup for the Finnish B national team. At the end of 1997 he moved with his family to Vuokatti to attend sports school there.

At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1998 in St. Moritz , Tallus won the team title together with Mikko Keskinarkaus , Samppa Lajunen and Hannu Manninen . In December 1998 he won the B-World Cup for the first time in Taivalkoski . He also won both competitions in Vuokatti . He then switched to the A-team and was able to celebrate his first podium finish with second place at his first World Cup on January 3, 1999 in Schonach in the Black Forest .

Breakthrough in the World Cup

At the beginning of the 1999/2000 season , Tallus again achieved two top 10 placements in Vuokatti. Also in Steamboat Springs , he just missed his second podium in fourth. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2000 in Štrbské Pleso , he won gold again with the team. Four weeks later, in Chaux-Neuve, he was again on the podium in second place. He was still leading the World Cup after ski jumping. At the end of the season he also reached third place again in Oslo . In the overall standings, Tallus was 14th after the season.

In the 2000/01 season Tallus started cautiously with 20th and 42nd place in Kuopio . In January 2001 he was once again among the top ten in Reit im Winkl . In Park City , he and the team achieved their first World Cup victory in the team mass start. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2001 in Karpacz , Poland , Tallus won a total of three silver medals.

Only a few days after the successes at the Junior World Championships, he started at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2001 in Lahti . Together with Jari Mantila , Hannu Manninen and Samppa Lajunen, he won the bronze medal in the team competition behind Norway and Austria . In the sprint, Tallus just barely missed his first individual medal in fourth. At the end of the season he also achieved good placings in the World Cup and finished the season fourth in the overall standings.

Olympic victory

Also in the 2001/02 season he was able to show good, but less constant performances. At the last World Cup before the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , Tallus stood on the podium for the first time of the season. The Olympics were all the more successful for him. He won the silver medal in the Gundersen singles after leading the ski jumping. He won gold with the team and in the sprint he passed the bronze medal by just 5 seconds behind Felix Gottwald and came fourth. In his first World Cup after the games in Lahti, he again reached third place. At the penultimate competition of the season in Oslo he finally achieved the best result of the season with second place.

At the 2002 Summer Grand Prix, Tallus achieved two fourth places in Winterberg and Klingenthal, and thus achieved seventh place in the overall ranking for the second time since 2000.

Slump in performance

From the 2002/03 season , Tallus struggled with a significant drop in performance. In the opening competition in Kuusamo he only finished 47th and thus far behind the points. Even if points jumped out for Tallus again in the following World Cups, he missed the leap into the top of the world and could not reach any podium. Even at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Val di Fiemme , Tallus was not more successful in the individual competitions. Only with the team did he defend the bronze medal in the team competition.

As a result, it took until January 2004 for Tallus to land in the top of the world again. With the team he won the team world cup in Oberstdorf . In the individual World Cups he was only able to convince in fourth place again in Oslo at the end of February. However, this was only an exception. There were still no podium places. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf in 2005 , Tallus remained with the team without a medal. In the end, the team only finished fourth.

After Tallus achieved two fourth places in Val di Fiemme in January 2006, he now traveled to the 24-year-old as a Finnish hope for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . In both individual competitions he was fifth, with the team he took bronze.

Comeback at the top of the world

At the end of 2006, Tallus succeeded again in making contact with the world's best. On January 14, 2007 he was back on top of the podium at the Team Mass Start World Cup in Lago di Tesero . At the mass start singles in Zakopane he finally achieved a single podium again a short time later with second place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo in 2007 , he won the gold medal in the team competition with the team. In the Gundersen singles he was 11th in the end.

The world championship title in the team was the last great success for Tallus. He was only rarely able to jump to the top positions in the following World Cups. At the 2008 Summer Grand Prix in Oberstdorf, he achieved another podium with second place. It was the last of his playing career.

End of career

From the 2008/09 season onwards , Tallus mostly just chased the world's best. Even at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , he could no longer achieve any successes. The team also clearly missed defending the 2007 title in eighth place.

After the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver remained unsuccessful for Tallus and he was only 38th on the normal hill and only 32nd on the large hill and only achieved seventh place with the team, he ended his active sports career in June 2010.

Tallus now lives in Kuopio . He has a sister and a brother.
