Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 1998

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 31st Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1998 took place from January 21st to 25th, 1998 in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Thus, after 1977 ( Sainte-Croix ) and 1985 ( Täsch ), Switzerland hosted this most important junior competition in Nordic skiing for the third time. St. Moritz, one of the most traditional winter sports locations in the Alps , where the Olympic Winter Games in 1928 and 1948 had already taken place, was selected for the Junior World Championships. After Lake Placid (1986 Junior World Championships) and Calgary in the previous year, St. Moritz was only the third Olympic city to host World Junior Championships.

The most successful nation of the competitions was Finland with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals, whereby the northern Europeans were able to succeed especially in the Nordic combined , in which they won both competitions.

Competition venues

The ski jumping competitions and the Nordic combined jumping were held on the Olympic hill , which had been modernized again especially for the Junior World Championships and on which international jumping competitions were held for the first time in six years. The cross-country skiing competitions for specialists and combiners took place on the trails in Pontresina , a few kilometers away .
