Choi Heung-chul (born December 3, 1981 in Muju ) is a South Korean ski jumper .

Career

Choi started his international career in 1996 in the Continental Cup. After good performance, he was able to qualify for a World Cup competition for the first time in Engelberg at the end of 1997 and, in 25th place, immediately scored World Cup points. At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano , he finished 46th on the normal hill and 40th on the large hill. The next year at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Ramsau in 1999 he took 66th place on the large hill and 61st place on the normal hill. After further good performances in the World Cup, he reached 43rd place at the Ski Flying World Championships in Vikersund. A few days later he achieved eleventh place at Iron Mountain in the USA, his best ever World Cup result. Then he got a bit weaker and only got 28th World Cup points in Hakuba in early 2001 . Choi took part in the 2001 Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti . After he was only 48th on the large hill, he finished 24th on the normal hill. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , he reached eighth place on the large hill with the team. A few days later he won a Continental Cup competition in Schönwald . After a 21st place at the Ski Flying World Championships 2002 in Harrachov and a Continental Cup victory in Calgary , his performance deteriorated significantly.

In the 2002/03 season he was only able to qualify for two competitions. Here Choi only finished 48th and 50th. He also didn't score any points in the Continental Cup this winter and at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Val di Fiemme he could only qualify on the large hill and finished 49th, so he started the next season often only in the Continental Cup and finished 90th overall with 32 points. In the World Cup he only qualified in Willingen and was 48th. At the Ski Flying World Championships in Planica , Choi was 50th out of 54 jumpers. He got better the next summer. Choi's best result in summer 2004 was a 31st place in Hinterzarten . The next winter he initially only jumped in the Continental Cup. However, he only won 17 points once. At the Universiade in Innsbruck , Choi finished eleventh and 14th. In Titisee-Neustadt , he was again at the start of a World Cup but after a canceled qualification, he was only 60.

At the Continental Cup in Lauscha , he jumped back onto the podium in third place. After a 20th place the following day, he was nominated again for the World Cup in Sapporo in early February . After a 34th place on the first day as 22nd for the first time in 2 years again World Cup points. Choi took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf . After the 43rd place in the individual on the normal hill he was tenth in the team on the same hill and 13th on the large hill. In the summer he won 21 points in Courchevel. For the next 2 years he mostly jumped in the World Cup. While he remained without points in the 2005/06 season, he scored 10 points in the 2006/07 season and 6 points in the 2007/08 season. At major events he achieved the following results during this time: 47th on the normal hill and 13th in the team at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Pragelato , 28th on the normal hill at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo.

At the 2008 Summer Grand Prix, he scored points every time he competed. In the end he was 42nd overall with 57 points. With a personal best distance of 207.5 meters, set up in Planica on March 14, 2008, he is the South Korean record holder in ski flying.

But the next season was the worst of his career so far. He couldn't qualify for a single World Cup competition and only achieved mediocre results in the Continental Cup. On January 14th, he jumped only in the FIS Cup for the first time and was only ninth out of 17 jumpers. The jumping was in Harbin . The bright spot was the Universiade, which also took place in Harbin, China. Here Choi was ninth on the normal hill and third on the large hill. He won gold with the team.

In the summer he won an FIS Cup in Villach . It was the second FIS Cup competition in his career. at which he competed. He always qualified in the Summer Grand Prix and also scored 15th and 30th in Hakuba . In the next season, Choi was able to qualify several times, but remained without points. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Choi was eliminated as 48th on the normal hill and 49th on the large hill after the first round.

Since then he has performed well again. In the summer of 2010 he always qualified, and also won points in four of the six competitions in which he competed. The best were two twelfth places in Einsiedeln and Hakuba . In the end he got 54 points and finished 34th overall. This was his best overall result in the summer. In Engelberg he was able to qualify for all jumping competitions in winter and finished in 29th, 37th and 28th place. In the Four Hills Tournament, however, he missed the qualification in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen . At the Winter Asian Games 2011 in Almaty , Kazakhstan , he won the bronze medal in team jumping with the Korean team.

From the 2011/12 season, his performance deteriorated again. In the summer of 2011 he only achieved one Grand Prix point as 30th in Einsiedeln . In the World Cup 2011/12 he did not survive the qualification in any individual jumping. In the summer of 2012 , he scored three Grand Prix points, which he scored 28th in Hakuba. In the 2012/13 World Cup he started again in three individual competitions, but did not get past 44th place in the Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf. At the 2013 Summer Grand Prix he achieved a total of 13 points with places 27 and 22 in Almaty. In the following winter he again failed to qualify for an individual competition in the World Cup . At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , however, he was able to qualify for both individual competitions, but then retired as 43rd on the normal hill and 44th on the large hill after the first round. With the South Korean team, he finished eleventh on the large hill.

In the 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons, Choi did not make it into the points in either the World Cup, the Grand Prix or the Continental Cup. In these three years he did not get past 47th place in the World Cup, 35th place in the Grand Prix and 32nd place in the Continental Cup. In the World Cup and Grand Prix, he mostly failed in qualifying. Also at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun , he did not survive the qualification either on the normal hill or on the large hill. With the South Korean team, he finished eleventh. He finished the ski flying world championship in 2016 on the Kulm as 40th in the individual. He achieved a respectable success on January 23, 2016 when he won his second FIS Cup competition in Pyeongchang . At the Winter Asian Games 2017 in Sapporo , Japan , he finished eleven in the individual competitions on the normal hill and eight on the large hill. In the team competition he was able to repeat the success of 2011 and won the bronze medal together with Lee Ju-chan , Kim Hyun-ki and Choi Seou .

In the summer of 2017, Choi was again unable to get any Grand Prix points. In the 2017/18 World Cup he only started in Wisła and Engelberg in the qualification. But he did not reach the competition in any jumping. On January 20, 2018, he reached the points in the COC for the first time since August 2013 in two Continental Cup competitions in Erzurum . On that day he finished 28th and 29th. A week later he was able to get points again in Sapporo in 24th place. He thus achieved twelve COC points in the 2017/18 season and ended up in 136th place overall. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in his home country, Choi only started in the team competition on the large hill . South Korea only had two starting places for the individual competitions, but was allowed to participate as a host with a team in the team event. The South Korean team finished twelfth and last place.

At the Continental Cup competition in Shchuchinsk in July 2019, Choi reached the podium for the first time in more than fourteen years.
