Team competitions | 5 | 1 |
The 45th Nordic World Ski Championships took place from February 16 to 27, 2005 in Oberstdorf ( Germany ). The winter sports resort in the Allgäu was the venue for the second time since 1987 . 19 competitions were held, including twelve cross-country skiing , four ski jumping and three Nordic combined competitions . The ski jumping competitions took place on the Schattenbergschanze , which every year is also one of the four ski jumps from which the Four Hills Tournament is used.
There were again changes in cross-country skiing. For the first time, a team sprint competition was held for women and men. The pursuit race was given different lengths: for women 7.5 km classic + 7.5 km freestyle (previously 5 + 5), for men 15.5 km classic + 15.5 km freestyle (previously 10 + 10). The competitions, which alternated from major event to major event, were held once classic and once freestyle - for women over 15 km / for men over 30 km - were omitted. There was also a change in ski jumping: As in the 2001 World Championships, team jumping was also held on the normal hill.
By far the most successful nation was Norway , which this time was even further ahead than before with seven World Cup titles. Germany , Russia and Austria each won two gold medals. The hopes of the German cross-country skiers so successful in the World Cup were not fulfilled at this home World Cup. Only the men's relay could win a medal at all. In the women's category, the Norwegian Marit Bjørgen won three World Cup titles. Cross-country skiers Tore Ruud Hofstad and Frode Estil , both from Norway, each won an individual and a relay gold medal. The German Nordic combined athlete Ronny Ackermann presented himself even better than at the last World Cup , winning both individual disciplines and silver in the team competition.

There was a surprising double success for Italy, just as surprising was fourth place for Lars Berger, who is also strong in biathlon, who was only 2.7 seconds short of the bronze medal. Austria's hope for a medal, Christian Hoffmann , did not start because of a cold.

Olympic Champion 2002 : Norway ( Thomas Alsgaard , Frode Estil , Kristen Skjeldal , Anders Aukland ) World Champion 2003 : Norway ( Anders Aukland , Frode Estil , Tore Ruud Hofstad , Thomas Alsgaard )

The first two runners of each team ran in the classic style, the last two in the free style.
Here, too, after the first three runners, another disappointment seemed to be looming for Germany's cross-country skiers. Axel Teichmann took over his part as the final runner, far behind the clearly leading Norwegians and also with a clear distance to the Russians and Italians. After completing the first half of his route, hardly anything had changed. But then Teichmann accelerated in a way that nobody could have expected. He first overtook Cristian Zorzi and then in the long final climb also Nikolai Bolshakow , so that it was enough for the silver medal.
The Swiss team with Beat Koch , Reto Burgermeister , Gion-Andrea Bundi and Remo Fischer experienced the worst debacle in the more than 100-year history of the Nordic sport of the Swiss Ski Association: the relay was in 16th place after 30 km because of the risk of lapping taken out of competition.
