Kristian Hammer (born March 20, 1976 in Narvik ) is a former Norwegian Nordic combined skier .

Career

Hammer celebrated his first success with third place in the B World Cup on December 11, 1994 in Vuokatti . On January 14, 1995 he made his debut in Liberec as part of the Nordic Combined World Cup . With rank 11 he was able to win his first World Cup points straight away. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Gällivare in 1995 , he was part of the team in the team competition and won the bronze medal together with Jacob Gunnes and Jermund Lunder . After he won points again in the World Cup in Liberec in January 1996, he started at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Asiago in 1996 and won the gold medal together with Sverre Rotevatn and Preben Fjære Brynemo .

After the success in Asiago, Hammer moved permanently to the World Cup squad. In Murau he achieved a top 10 place for the first time in ninth place. In January 1997, he made his first podium finish in Val di Fiemme and finished third. At the Norwegian Championships in Mo i Rana he won the individual silver medal behind Bjarte Engen Vik .

At the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano in 1998 , the now 22-year-old Hammer started in the singles and reached rank 26. Shortly afterwards he won silver again at the Norwegian Championships in Trondheim in 1998 .

In December 1999 Hammer was able to compete in four B-World Cup competitions in Taivalkoski and Val di Fiemme. In February 2000 he won a World Cup race for the first time in Sapporo . He was also on the podium again in Lahti and Oslo in third place. The 1999/00 season he finally finished 11th in the overall standings.

In his most successful season 2000/01 Hammer started with fourth place in Kuopio , before he could win Lillehammer the individual competition. He was also at the top of the podium in January 2001 in Reit im Winkl . After two third places in Park City and two top 10 placements in Steamboat Springs , he started at the 2001 World Cup in Lahti. There he won the gold medal in the team competition in front of the teams from Austria and Finland together with Kenneth Braaten , Sverre Rotevatn and Bjarte Engen Vik . Shortly after the World Cup, he won silver for the third time at the 2001 Norwegian Championships in Trondheim. At the end of the season, which he finished fourth in the overall standings and third in the Sprint World Cup overall standings, he was able to celebrate his fourth and last individual World Cup victory in Sapporo .

In the 2001/02 season he started as successfully as last year with two third places in Kuopio, but shortly after the start of the season could not achieve any top 10 placements in the individual. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , Hammer was again without a medal. After eighth place in the individual and 20th place in the sprint, the team with fifth place remained unsuccessful as a world championship despite being the favorites. After the Olympic Games, Hammer was able to improve his performance again and was back on the podium in second place at the Summer Grand Prix in Klingenthal . In the World Cup, however, he was no longer able to make it onto the podium.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Val di Fiemme, he reached fifth place in the Gundersen singles. Also in the sprint he just missed the medal ranks in sixth place. With the team, he ended up in fourth place. So the title was not defended after 2001.

At the Norwegian Championships in Lillehammer in 2003 , Hammer won his first and last two national titles in singles and sprints.

In the summer of 2003, Hammer was able to jump onto the podium again in Winterberg. From the 2003/04 season he clearly missed the top 10 ranks in the World Cup competitions. It was not until the 2004/05 season that he managed to jump back to the top of the world in fifth at the opening competition in Kuusamo . In January 2005 in Liberec he achieved a podium finish again as second after a long time. Shortly afterwards he started at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf . There he won the team title together with Petter Tande , Håvard Klemetsen and Magnus Moan . Hammer also showed a surprisingly good performance in the sprint and won the bronze medal in the end.

In the World Cup, however, Hammer subsequently failed to win. He also failed to return to the top of the world. Health problems were considered the reason for this. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he started again in both individual disciplines. After rank 35 in the individual, he reached rank 28 in the sprint. Even at his two last World Cups in Oslo in March, he remained without points, whereupon he ended his active career after the season.

For the 2006/07 season he was the head coach of the Norwegian B national team and took over on May 1, 2007 the post of cross-country co-trainer for the senior national team. On September 1, 2009, he announced his resignation from the coaching position in order to be able to spend more time with his family.

Hammer is married and now lives in Raholt .
