Bård Jørgen Elden (born June 17, 1968 in Namdalseid ) is a former Norwegian Nordic combined skier .

Career

Elden made his international debut at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1987 in Asiago . He won the silver medal in the team competition together with Jon Andersen and Trond Arne Bredesen . On March 13, 1987 he made his debut in the Nordic Combined World Cup in Leningrad . As eleventh, he immediately reached the points. In the 1987/88 season , too , he immediately won points in St. Moritz and Seefeld in Tyrol . At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1988 , after winning the bronze medal in the individual competition, he won the team competition together with his brother Trond Einar Elden and Andersen. He finished the last competition of the season in Rovaniemi in 14th place and again won two World Cup points.

In the 1988/89 season started Elden with a good second spot in Saalfelden and his first podium. A little later, he achieved his first and only World Cup victory in Breitenwang . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1989 he won the gold medal with the Norwegian relay together with his brother and Bredesen. A little later he won the silver medal in combination at the Norwegian Championship in 1989 behind his brother. He finished the World Cup season in fourth place overall.

For the 1989/90 season he also achieved points in all World Cups, including third place in Štrbské Pleso . At the Norwegian Championships in 1990 and 1991 Elden only reached fifth place in the combination. It was not until the Norwegian Championships in Trondheim and Molde in 1992 that he won his first title in this discipline.

At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , Elden came in 21st place in the individual combination.

In the following years he landed again in all World Cups among the best 15. In December 1995 in Steamboat Springs he managed to finish second again on the podium. After the 1996/97 season Elden ended his active career.

Elden was considered the best cross-country skier in the Nordic Combined. He achieved the fastest time in cross-country skiing 62 times in competitions.

In April 2009, Elden succeeded Alexander Diess as head coach of the ÖSV combiners. He led the Austrian combiners to team gold at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver and gold twice at the 2011 World Championships in Oslo. After three years, he ended his coaching activity in the ÖSV in 2012.
