Klaus Ofner (born August 15, 1968 in Murau , Styria ) is a former Austrian Nordic combined athlete .

Career

The Styrian Ofner was one of the best athletes in Nordic combined in the early 1990s and, in the wake of the success of his teammate Klaus Sulzenbacher, grew to become the second Austrian Nordic combined athlete of international stature. The graduate of the Stams Ski School made his debut in the Nordic Combined World Cup on December 29, 1988 . He was the second straight away to reach his first podium in Oberwiesenthal . In January he was fifth in Reit im Winkl .

Klaus Ofner celebrated his greatest successes at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme in 1991, when he was named world champion in the team competition together with Klaus Sulzenbacher and Günter Csar and won the bronze medal in the individual competition behind Fred Børre Lundberg from Norway and Klaus Sulzenbacher.

In his most successful World Cup season in 1991/92 Ofner achieved podium places in Murau and Lahti . Even if there was no victory in the season, he finished the season in fourth place overall.

The Murauer won his second bronze medal at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville together with Stefan Kreiner and Klaus Sulzenbacher in a team competition. At that time, the Austrians were beaten by the relay teams from Japan and Norway .

After Sulzenbacher and Czar retired, there was a generation change in Nordic Combined in Austria. With the help of the meanwhile established Ofner it was necessary to build up a completely new team. Ofner celebrated his last major success with this young team led by Mario Stecher , Robert Stadelmann and Georg Riedelsperger , which came in fifth at the 1995 World Cup in Thunder Bay .
