Geographical location

Reit im Winkl is located in the Chiemgau , south of the Chiemsee , and at 696 m it is the highest municipality in the Traunstein district .

The place in the northern section of the Leukental called Kaiserwinkl is surrounded in the south, east and north by protective peripheral mountains and only open to the west towards the Inn Valley . The clouds that accumulate there, in connection with the cold air lakes typical of mountain valleys, lead to frequent snowfall in winter, so that the place is also known as the “snow hole” because of its snow-sure location. Compared to other winter sports areas, which are at a similar altitude ( 700  m above sea  level ), a lot of snow falls here and it stays there for the longest.

Geologically, Reit im Winkl belongs to the Northern Limestone Alps. The mountains around the place are part of the Chiemgauer and thus the Bavarian Alps. The highest point in the municipality is the Dürrnbachhorn (1776 m).

history

Until the church is planted

Reit im Winkl is said to be founded by the Lords of Neuburg-Falkenstein and mentioned for the first time in a deed of donation from 1160, whereby according to the current state of research, it was first mentioned as “St. Pankraz am Eck ”around 1215 is accepted.

The place changed its name several times, whereby the reference to the angle or to the origin through clearing always remained. Since 1275 it belonged to the Marquartstein Care Court, Burghausen Rent Office in the Duchy (later Electorate) of Bavaria and under canon law to the Chiemsee Diocese .

In 1505, as a result of the Landshut War of Succession , Reit im Winkl was set as the border town to Tyrol, the neighboring courts of Kitzbühel , Kufstein and Rattenberg , which previously belonged to Bavaria , were added to Tyrol.

Reit im Winkl was spared the acts of war of the Thirty Years' War , but the plague was brought to the village by people moving around. Three pillars of plague donated at the time commemorate this event.

In 1738, an elementary school was set up in Reit im Winkl in the miller's room, which was initially little frequented due to the commitment of the children to the often hard agricultural work, the harsh winter and the lack of interest on the part of the parents.

In 1805, took place after 1803 by the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss specified secularization the founding of the parish, Reit im Winkl. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

19th and 20th centuries

In 1826 the last wolf was shot in Reit im Winkl. This is also the reason for the establishment of the oldest local association, the music band, which is mentioned for the first time at this event as music on the joyous procession from Seegatterl to Reit im Winkl with the shot wolf.

In 1842 a customs office was set up on the border. After it was dissolved in the course of the annexation of Austria to the German Reich between 1938 and 1945, it was dissolved in 1998 when Austria joined the Schengen Agreement . In 1894 a gendarmerie station was set up, which existed as a border police station until 1995 after the Second World War . In 1861 Reit im Winkl came to the royal Bavarian district office of Traunstein. In 1873 the first stagecoach connection from Unterwössen to Reit im Winkl was set up, and a post office was established in Reit im Winkl. Volunteer fire brigades were founded all over Bavaria around 1875 , including in Reit im Winkl in 1879.

With the construction of a hydropower plant on Grünbühel in 1906, electricity found its way into Reit im Winkl. In 1911 a hospital, today's senior citizens and nursing home, was founded. In 1923 the forest railway Ruhpolding-Reit im Winkl was opened (discontinued in 1931), in 1925 a postal service was added from Marquartstein, and in 1937 a direct bus line from Munich-Reit im Winkl was established (discontinued in 1996). In 1938 Austria was annexed to the German Reich, so the border was dissolved by 1945.

In 1941 the first kindergarten was founded by the National Socialist Welfare Service.

Reit im Winkl was largely spared from acts of war during World War II , only in the last days of the war between May 5 and 7, 1945 there were battles in Seegatterl, on May 8 the place was handed over to the Americans, after a few days before Americans (they thought Reit im Winkl was Reith bei Kitzbühel). After the collapse of the Nazi regime, the invasion of the United States and the re-establishment of the Free State of Bavaria, the Reit im Winkl community remained identical to the pre-war community. The population remained relatively constant due to the fact that a large part of the displaced people assigned to the place were only quartered for a short time.

In 1953 Pastor Wiesheu discovered the glacier cut on the Wimmerkreuz, thus the geological prehistory of the place can be described.

Development of tourism

Reit im Winkl owes its beginning to tourism to a visit by the King of Bavaria , Maximilian II. During his trip to the Alps in 1858, but there were also some nobles from northern Germany in Reit im Winkl for summer holidays in the 18th century. As a result of the royal visit in 1858, more and more nobles, writers and other public figures came to Reit im Winkl in the last half of the 19th century.

The Beautification Association (today Tourist Association) was founded in 1896 in order to bring tourism into order and to promote it. Another concern of this association was the construction of a railway line to Reit im Winkl, which found its fulfillment in 1923 with the opening of the forest railway from Ruhpolding to Reit im Winkl. In 1904 the first regulations for the beautification of the area were passed.

During the Nazi regime, Reit im Winkl also benefited from the trips of the KdF movement.

After the Second World War, Reit im Winkl experienced a tourism boom because the borders were closed to Germans. Sports competitions and their reporting in the media also contributed to this, for example 17,000 visitors at the German Nordic Ski Championships in February 1950. Various prominent politicians visited the site in the 1950s, including Ernst Reuter and Federal President Theodor Heuss .

Tourism got new competition in the course of the 1960s through the increasingly popular trips to the Mediterranean region.

In 1973 the Winklmoos-Steinplatte ski area was opened. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, there was a brief boom, as guests from Saxony and Thuringia could travel to their holiday resorts in the Alps that they had visited before the war. However, they were only able to compensate for the decline in overnight stays for a short time, and the number of guests has been falling again since the mid-1990s.

The place has been a climatic health resort since 1956 . This made it possible to bring more guests to the place. A visitor's tax has been levied on guests staying here since 1953 .

Schell-Unter-Sage

Schell Unter

According to legend, when the countries of Europe were redistributed after the turmoil of the Napoleonic wars in the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Reit im Winkl was forgotten due to its remote location. So that no new war had to be fought for this small spot in the Alps, the rulers of Bavaria, Salzburg and Tyrol agreed to play cards. In this game, the Bavarian ruler is said to have taken the last and decisive trick with the Schellunter and won Reit im Winkl for Bavaria. Since then, the Schellunter is the secret coat of arms of the place. Mountain riflemen and traditional costume clubs still use it today as a sign of recognition. The “ Musterer ” also used it as a sign of identification (a Schellunter card on their hat) to distinguish themselves from the boys from the other villages.

The correctness of this legend can be doubted with good reason, it is more likely to be seen as an anecdote. The classification in the time of the Congress of Vienna is probably wrong, since Salzburg was no longer a separate state rule. The depiction of the legend on the wagon of the traditional costume association, which is carried on pageants, suggests the time around 1777, i.e. the time of the War of the Bavarian Succession , in which Bavaria also had to surrender the Innviertel to Austria.

Incorporations

In the course of the regional reform, Reit im Winkl had no incorporations due to the closed valley location. There were only a few community-free areas that were enclosed by the community area.

Between 1988 and 2018 the population of the municipality decreased from 2,705 to 2,333 by -372 inhabitants or by -13.8%.

Coat of arms and flag

The coat of arms from 1950 shows the eagle on a yellow background of the Chiemsee diocese , to which Reit im Winkl belonged from 1275 until it was transferred to the Freising diocese in 1804. The upward tapering shape of the yellow background symbolizes the location of the municipality in the corner between Salzburg and Tyrol. The burning branch and the sapie (a tool for backing wood) are an allusion to the formation of the community through clearing (riding comes from the word clearing) in the 11th and 12th centuries.

The coat of arms from 1929 showed the local warrior chapel in blue on a green hill. Since this coat of arms never really caught on and was also unheraldic and lacked a historical basis, the main state archive had been introducing a new coat of arms since 1949.

The flag is colored green-white-blue. This is an exception in the coloring, as the heraldic coloring of the old coat of arms from 1929 was used here. Since the green-white-blue flags for the Nordic Ski Championships in 1950 had already been provisionally approved and purchased, in 1953, as an exception, a color scheme for the flag that deviated from the color of the coat of arms was approved. Optionally, the municipal coat of arms can also be built into the upper part.

Partnerships and sponsorships

There is no town twinning in the true sense of the word in Reit im Winkl, but there has been an exchange with the municipality of Hagnau on Lake Constance for around 50 years , which is mainly maintained by the music band.

Since 1993, the community has also been sponsoring the 2nd Company of the Mountain Infantry Battalion 231 in Bad Reichenhall. For this reason, the latter carries out the solemn swearing in of those doing military service in Reit im Winkl.

Religions

The community is predominantly Catholic, with the number of Evangelicals steadily increasing after 1945. Since 1936 Reit im Winkl has also had an Evangelical Lutheran church, the Bergkirchlein on Birnbacher Straße.

The Evangelical Lutheran parish office is located in Ruhpolding .

The heart of the parish is the parish church of St. Pankratius. It is located in the center of the village on the church square. The parish also has the church of St. Johann im Gebirg in Winklmoos.

In Reit im Winkl, the Catholic rectory is located right behind the church in the rectory, which is also the pastor's house and at the same time represents the parish center with the parish hall. It also houses the parish hall, which is mainly used for smaller events.

Before the Catholic parish of St. Pankratius in Reit im Winkl was founded in 1805, Reit im Winkl belonged to the parish of Kirchdorf in Tirol ( Diocese of Chiemsee ). Also since 1803 the parish has belonged to the diocese of Munich and Freising, which was elevated to the archdiocese.

Administratively, the Reit im Winkl parish is now part of the Traunstein deanery in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising . With the inauguration of Pastor Martin Strasser in December 2013, a redesign of the parish administration is planned. By 2015 Pastor Strasser is to organize a parish association consisting of the parishes Reit im Winkl, Unterwössen, Oberwössen and Schleching. For the four parishes, this is associated with a radical change in their church history, which spans many centuries. In order to be able to cope with this challenge in terms of personnel, the parish priest is supported by the two deacons Erik Oberhorner and Klaus Mühlberger, who, however, have a full-time civilian profession, the retired priests Josef Kreuzpointner and Paul Voggenauer as well as the Indian Father Jim John Vadakkumparambil O'Carm. You are responsible for the entire network.

As part of a large festival service on January 5, 2014, the o. Priests and deacons publicly declare their readiness for the office and were officially introduced to the Pankratius Church by the Dean Georg Lindl.

Churches and chapels of the parish

Catholic parish church of St. Pankratius

In 1393 the first church mentioned there (St. Pankratius ) was consecrated together with other churches (Kirchdorf, Schwendt , Kössen).

The current listed Catholic parish church of St.  Pankratius was built in 1911/13 according to a design by the Munich architect Joseph Elsner senior . The new building was necessary because at that time there was only one church with an emergency roof (consequences of a fire in 1894). Therefore a church building association was founded, which set itself the task of financing a new church building.

The interior of the church was renovated several times (in 1962/63, 1975/76, 1992/93) before it received its current interior design. In 2000 a new organ was installed.

St. Johann in the mountains

The church of St. Johann im Gebirg, built in the 1960s, is located in the Winklmoos district.

Chapels

There are also numerous chapels in Reit im Winkl:

  • Kronbichlerkapelle in Oberbichl; oldest chapel with frescoes from 1694
  • Corner chapel (1710)
  • Entfeldener chapel
  • Blindau Chapel
  • Chapel of the Assumption in Winklmoos
  • Anna chapel on the Hemmersuppen Alm
  • War memorial chapel, built according to plans by Bruno Biehler

Economy and Infrastructure

economy

In 2009, according to official statistics, there were 213 employees in the manufacturing sector and 482 in trade, transport and hospitality, and 119 in public and private service providers at the place of work. There were 708 employees subject to social security contributions at the place of residence. There was one in manufacturing and four in construction. In addition, there were 37 farms in 2009, the agricultural area was 792 hectares , of which 792 hectares were permanent green space .

Tourism is the main livelihood here. More than 80% of the working population live on it. There are around 400 businesses with 5000 beds in the community. The Winklmoos-Alm belongs to Reit im Winkl and , together with the Austrian ski area on the Steinplatte, is a popular hiking area and ski center.

In Reit im Winkl, the trades, especially carpenters and joineries, are the main businesses. Due to the poor economic situation and the decline in new buildings on site and the involvement of external construction companies, however, some companies had to close or reduce their staff considerably.

In contrast to other places in the district, the influx of large discount companies could largely be prevented, so that the local grocery stores can keep up relatively well.

The opening of the borders in the course of European unification and the introduction of the euro can be described as an opportunity and at the same time a threat to the economy in Reit im Winkl. On the one hand, new employment opportunities are opening up for the local population in neighboring Austria. This made it possible for local companies to expand. Due to the lower VAT rates in Germany (seven percent on groceries and other everyday products), many Tyroleans come to Reit im Winkl to shop. However, with the introduction of the eco-tax in Germany, fuel tourism has emerged that forced local gas station tenants to give up.

In Reit im Winkl, a biomass district heating supply was set up in 2000 , with the aim of supplying all (accessible) properties with CO 2 -neutral heat ( water heated by burning wood chips ). For its efforts to protect the environment, the municipality of Reit im Winkl has been recognized as a “municipality of the future” and has received additional environmental prizes. As of January 1, 2008, there were around 317 subscribers on the approximately 21-kilometer network. The wood chip plant currently replaces around 2.6 million liters of heating oil annually. This corresponds to two thirds of the local energy requirement and reduces pollution by 90%. Thanks to Naturwärme GmbH & Co. KG, the predicate climatic health resort for Reit im Winkl can be secured in the long term. As a community organization, the plant is unique in Germany, as all of the more than 90 shareholders - apart from the 20% share of the community, 4.5% E.ON and three others - are from Reit im Winkl. The biomass heating plant is also a pioneering achievement in that it is the only one in Germany to cover almost an entire municipality in the area and, unlike elsewhere, it does not only supply new building areas with renewable energies. Resident associations

ÖAV section Kössen-Reit im Winkl

After it was founded around 1910, a PES section was re-established in Kössen in 1946 , to which many Reit im Winklers have joined over time, so that this section has the specialty of being active both in Germany and Austria . In addition to alpine sports activities, youth work is one of the main concerns of the section. This is expressed in the annual youth camps as well as in regular youth meetings of the Alpine Club youth. The Alpine Association also contributes to cultural life with the folk dance with Tyrolean church music, which always takes place on the third weekend in September. The Alpine Club Home on Loferaustraße is a popular venue for celebrations and smaller events. The section has around 1200 members who come from Kössen, Reit im Winkl and the neighboring communities.

Mountain costume preservation association (GTEV) "Dö Koasawinkla"

history

In the course of the establishment of mountain costume preservation associations in Upper Bavaria from 1883 onwards, GTEV "Dö Koasawinkla" was founded in 1901 by 22 young boys in the Gasthof Oberwirt. The aim of the association was to preserve the alpine costumes, customs and traditional folk music , also to entertain the summer visitors staying here.

In 1911, the first flag in the frame of a was Gaufests of Gauverbands I dedicated.

After initial difficulties in the club, the club began to flourish in 1927, the club costume was uniformly regulated and female members were accepted for the first time in 1928. In 1929 the historical costume group was founded in cooperation with the theater association. This appears in the old Reit im Winkler costume and performs historical dances. In 1931 the Mühlradl was rehearsed by the active group. During this time, alpine dances were held for the tourists and, as the highlight of the traditional costume year, the price platters were performed. In the mid-1930s, a delegation of the Plattler group platted the “Reit im Winkler” in the operetta film “ Im Weißen Rössl ”, which originated here.

During the Third Reich, the association was incorporated into the holiday organization of the NSDAP , KdF , from 1937 onwards a board of directors ("Trachtenwart") was appointed. Due to the drafting of the male members, especially the active ones, into the war, no alpine dance was held from 1940 onwards.

Re-establishment in 1945

On December 26, 1945 the re-establishment took place after the Second World War, in 1946 the change from Gauverband I to the Chiemgau-Alpenverband, founded in 1926, took place . In 1947, boys took part in a youth class for the first time in the price platters. In 1951, the 50th anniversary was celebrated with a traditional costume festival with flag consecration, for which 7,000 traditional costume people and 13,000 spectators came together. A children and youth group was founded in the early 1960s. At the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, successes could be celebrated with the Gaudirndldrahn. In 1974 a large delegation of the active and various music groups from Reit took part in a folklore meeting in Zakopane . At the same time, however, as with all traditional costume clubs during this period, there was an extreme shortage of young talent, which in 1974 almost led to the active group being dissolved. The club was able to recover from this in the following period, in particular because of the good youth work. In 1981 a Gaufest was held with a record audience of 25,000. At the end of the 1980s there was a new series of victories at Gau Dirndldrahn and Preisplattln, which lasted until the end of the 1990s.

Current

In 2001 the 100th founding party was celebrated in connection with the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Chiemgau Alpine Association. At the beginning of 2012 the association had 453 members, the first board member has been Hans Bauhofer since 2007. The association is a member of the Chiemgau Alpine Association for traditional costumes and customs . The sponsoring association is the GTEV "D'Achentaler" Unterwössen , the "Koasawinkla" are sponsoring associations of the traditional costume associations in Prien and Rottau .

Culture and sights

theatre

The farmer's theater, an amateur stage, should be mentioned in terms of theater performances. There are weekly guest performances during the season, mainly traditional comedies. There are three premiere pieces every year. On special occasions, however (especially for the locals), more demanding theater plays or plays that are based on the situation (such as club anniversaries or similar; previously “Wildererblut” 1999 and “Der Geisterbräu” 2007) are performed.

Museums

  • A museum in Reit im Winkl is the local history museum "Hausenhäusl" on Weitseestrasse. Here an insight is given into the rural working and living environment that prevailed in Reit im Winkl for centuries.
  • There is also the ski museum in the school building, which is home to one of the largest collections of skis, from the origins to modern racing skis that have been given to the museum by top athletes. The development of skiing and technology is also shown.
  • The small mineral museum is located in the eastern part of the swimming pool building.
  • In the attic of the parish church is the sacral museum under the direction of the former pastor Georg Beilhack.

Buildings

The most important buildings include the church of St. Pankratius from 1912/13, the chapel in the districts of Blindau, Oberbichl and Entfelden, the corner chapel on the old path to Marquartstein , the evangelical mountain church and the church of St. Johann im Gebirg in Winklmoos. Due to the building frenzy and the lack of monument protection in the 1950s and 1960s, many old farmhouses in the town center were demolished and replaced by new (more comfortable) buildings. The Foidlmoar property is to be mentioned as a well-preserved farmhouse at its core.

In Reit im Winkl a Middle Bavarian dialect prevails , which has a lot of echoes of the (Middle Bavarian) Tyrolean (see dialect continuum ). This is particularly evident in the hardening of “ch” and “ck” and “vi” for “a lot”, “Mi” for “mill” and “Gfi” for “feeling”.

There are also some words that are special only here (Reit im Winklerisch). Some examples are:

Reit im Winklerisch Standard German

Costumes

In Reit im Winkl, traditional costumes are mainly cultivated by the traditional clubs, but they are also worn on special and festive occasions outside of these clubs.

There are two different styles of traditional costume in the village: on the one hand the historical costume, which is worn by the historical costume group of the GTEV and the mountain riflemen, and on the other hand the Chiemgau costume, which is worn by the members of the traditional costume association and other associations (music band) and also outside as typical Reit im Winkler costume is worn.
