Life

Maria and Margot Hellwig in Europapark Rust, 2007

Maria Hellwig was born as the daughter of the electrician Heinrich Neumaier and his wife Maria. At the age of five she was on the stage of the farmer's theater in her home town for the first time. After finishing school, she completed an apprenticeship as a saleswoman.

In her spare time she played theater and took singing lessons. On stage she also met her first husband Joseph Fischer; he fell in World War II . From this marriage the daughter Margot (born July 5, 1941) emerged, with whom she performed in a duo as Maria and Margot Hellwig from 1963 .

She was married to Addi Hellwig from 1948 until his death in 1996. In 1948 she was engaged at the Hamburger Volksoper , where she acted in several roles, including Wed in the operetta The Land of Smiles . Maria Hellwig then founded a touring stage with her husband, with which she was touring for a number of years. Finally she was discovered by Franzl Lang in Reit im Winkl. She sang at the Platzl in Munich and recorded her first record in 1957. The first engagements in radio and television followed, which made Maria Hellwig increasingly known.

In 1964 Hellwig and her husband opened the restaurant-café Zum Kuhstall in Reit im Winkl in a former cowshed. At the beginning of the 1970s, Hellwig presented four episodes of the series Musik macht Laune. Then she got her own series from 1973, The Music Comes , which was first broadcast on October 6th. The series made Maria Hellwig known to an audience of millions. At the beginning, few episodes of ZDF were planned, but the success led to the series being produced for 10 years until 1983. In addition, she was allowed to moderate other programs on ZDF, such as The journey into the blue or morning exercises . From 1984 to 1991 she presented the program Heimatmelodie with her daughter Margot on RTL , followed by Servus, Grüezi and Hallo until 1993.

In 1986 Hellwig took part in the Grand Prix of Folk Music in 1986 with her daughter and the title Der Kaiser von Tirol for Germany . Exactly twenty years after the first Grand Prix of Folk Music, Maria and Margot Hellwig started again on May 25, 2006 with the song Our daily bread is music .

Several tours took Maria Hellwig, mostly as a host, to almost every continent. The programs had names such as Funny Musicians, Let's Go Leut - Maria Hellwig is coming, A colorful evening with Maria Hellwig and Heino, Funny Musicians, Musikantenstadl on the go, Kings of Folk Music, Alpine Christmas, Folk Christmas, Edelweiss of Folk Music, The Millennium Festival of Folk Music , Grand Prix of Folk Music or The Surprise Festival of Folk Music. Most recently, Maria and Margot Hellwig were on a major tour with the Spring Festival of Folk Music from February to May 2008.

After the death of her husband, Hellwig handed the Kuhstall restaurant and café over to her colleague Thomas Berger. She was still active until her death and was a regular guest on various television programs.

The final resting place of Maria Hellwig is in the cemetery of her home community Reit im Winkl.
