The crown of folk music is an idea by Hans R. Beierlein and was awarded annually from 1998 to 2012 at an MDR TV gala at the beginning of January . The award honored singers who had won an award in the field of folk music in the previous year or who had a particular success. There were also prizes of honor.

The prizes were awarded on the occasion of a TV gala in the Chemnitz city ​​hall , which was usually broadcast live on ARD and ORF . It reached around six million viewers.
