Life

Hertel was supposed to be a farmer, but he made a different decision. He preferred to sing the folk songs of his homeland, which made him a star in the GDR . He was able to confirm this position after reunification throughout Germany, even if he initially put his career in the background to promote that of his daughter Stefanie . Together they sang songs like When the Father and the Daughter or Little Dreams . Today father and daughter usually go their separate ways musically, even if they can be heard in a duet every now and then.

His best-known song to this day is Small Fish Grow Up by Pierre Kartner . In it he sings about his daughter's fledgling and that it is difficult for him to let go of her. Hertel has been on stage for 60 years and has released eight albums so far (as of December 2008).

On November 29th, 2008 he celebrated his 70th birthday at the Advent festival of folk music in Suhl. The MDR also produced the film Papa turns 70 by Stefanie Hertel & Stefan Mross.

For several years now, Hertel has been touring Germany with the concert program Zwei gute Freunde with pop singer Kay Dörfel .

Private

Hertel was married to his wife Elisabeth (1950–2017). His daughter is the German singer and presenter Stefanie Hertel .

On December 3rd, 2008 he was made an honorary citizen of his hometown Oelsnitz by the mayor of Oelsnitz, Eva-Maria Möbius, because he “made a special contribution to his hometown and the Vogtland culture”.
