The first commercial success came in 1996 when he met the Flippers producer Karlheinz Rupprich and got his first record deal with PolyGram . His song Hallo mein Engel was broadcast in many radio stations in 1996, so Dörfel was a guest on many television programs. After a label change in 2001, the single Total crazy followed . With the title mother, this song is all alone just for you , it lands an audience success. For the first time, Kay Dörfel went on a Christmas tour with her own program from the end of November 2009. At the beginning of March 2010 Kay Dörfel's second album, Alles nur Theater , was released with songs that he sings over and over again in his programs. In 2014 the single Hollywood was released and in 2015 the title What Men Really Want . This was followed by the longplay Auf und aus in 2016 and the album So am ich in 2018 .

In addition to his solo career, Kay Dörfel toured Germany with his long-time friend and colleague Eberhard Hertel with the program Zwei gute Freunde until 2011 and produced several duets with him. As a composer he gave Lena Valaitis a comeback hit in the spring of 2010 with And I Call Your Name . In February 2013 a duet lonplay was released, together with Willi Seitz, under the name Echte Engel . In 2019 Kay Dörfel produced a remake of It's Nice to Be in the World with the world star Anita Hegerland (duet partner of Roy Black and voice of great Mike Oldfield songs) and the duet Life is a miracle . He is a music publisher and managing director of the event company Stimmungszeit .

In 2014, after a stay in America and Canada, he developed the concept for the show Die Legende ROY BLACK . On October 25, 2014 the show had its premiere in the Dingslebener brewery. From 2015 to 2017 he was also on stage as the front man with The Cannons , the original band of Roy Black . After the death of Dieter Schwedes in 2017, the band announced their end.

On New Year's Eve 2017, his first own TV program, Silvestersause, ran on MyTVplus, for which he wrote and directed. Since 2020 he has been cooperating with the entertainment broadcaster Gute Laune TV , where he produces the show Goldene SchlagerJuwelen - German hits and their stories .
