Lena Valaitis (bourgeois Anelė Luise Jüssen ; * September 7, 1943 as Anelė Luise Valaitytė in Memel ) is a German pop singer .
Life
Valaitis came to West Germany as a toddler when her mother fled with her and her brother from the East Prussian city of Memel, which was destroyed by air raids towards the end of the Second World War . The father died as a soldier in the war.
After living on the island of Fehmarn for two years , the family initially settled in Memmingen . Lena Valaitis attended elementary school there and later the Lithuanian grammar school in Hüttenfeld . However, she dropped out of school two years before graduation and began an apprenticeship at the Deutsche Bundespost in Frankfurt am Main . Lena took private singing lessons while she was still at school. She continued this in Frankfurt and took part in several young talent competitions.
She started her musical career with her band Frederik Brothers . In 1970 she got a recording deal with Philips and on July 13, 1970 her first single Halt das Glück für uns fest was released . In the same year Lena Valaitis made her first television appearance on the ZDF turntable . Their first success came in 1971 with the German recording of the "Nickel Song" (whether it comes one way or another) . In the following years she produced successful titles with Jack White such as So wie ein Regenbogen, Bonjour mon amour and Who gives me back heaven .
In 1976 the singer reached the top 20 of the German single charts for the first time with the titles Da comes José the street musician and Ein Schöne Tag , the German version of Amazing Grace . In the same year she took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest with the song You make career . She also lent her voice to the chansons in the successful feature film Der Mädchenkrieg (1977).
Valaitis celebrated her greatest success in 1981, when she took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin with the title Johnny Blue, composed by Ralph Siegel , and came in second behind the British band Bucks Fizz . In the years that followed, Valaitis recorded a few more records, including a duet with Costa Cordalis , then things got a little quieter around her.
In 1982 she played the final song of the cartoon Mrs. Brisby and the secret of NIMH (in the original Flying Dreams , sung by Paul Williams ) in German. With the song Mein Schweigen war nur Spiel she appeared in the last broadcast of Dalli Dalli in September 1986 .
In 1992 she took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest for the third time with Wir seh'n uns wieder . At the end of 1993 she withdrew from show business.
In 2001 she made a comeback with the title I live for the moment ; later the duet with Hansi Hinterseer What can I do for it (2002) was particularly successful. In the summer of 2006 a duet with Hinterseer was recorded again, Muss i denn zum Städtele .
In the spring of 2008 her new single Du are not alone was released , with which she could also be seen in various TV shows. After her husband, Horst Jüssen , passed away on November 10th, 2008, a planned new album was not released. It was not until May 9, 2009 that Lena Valaitis reported on the television program Willkommen bei Carmen Nebel with a new version of the hit A beautiful day in the music business.
In February 2010 the new album Liebe ist… was released. On February 19, she reached number 74 in the German album charts , and on February 26, number 90. The title And I call your name , which she again presented in the program Willkommen bei Carmen Nebel , reached number one in the German conservative at the end of February Pop Airplaycharts and number 85 in the Conservative Pop annual charts. This comeback title was penned by the author duo Kay Dörfel and Ronald E. Müller, together with Norbert Hammerschmidt .
