Nora Nova

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nora Nova (born May 8, 1928 in Sofia as Ahinora Kumanova ) is a German - Bulgarian pop singer.

Life

She studied for 4 years at the Theater Academy in Sofia and took singing lessons at the same time. In 1960 she came to West Berlin, where she performed at the SFB. In the same year she is discovered by producer Nils Nobach and receives a recording contract with Electrola . The first single is Die große Chance / I stay with you, which like the following records did not make it into the charts. She received her first public attention when she won 4th place at the 1st German Schlager Festival on June 4, 1961 with Cherie , you are so dear if you smile . Then she switched to Ariola with Nobach, where the third single Men There is Sand am Meer / Nora (phone from St. Tropez) reached number 20 in the charts in January 1963.

With her single: I'm not an angel - I'm a beast , Nora Nova couldn't land a hit. The melody of the B-side Jose-Jose was also completely ignored for a while, but a few months later it became relatively well known by Rita Pavone. On the back of her first big hit: If I was a boy she sings: Okay, okay . It is exactly the melody of Jose-Jose , only with completely new lyrics.

On January 11, 1964, she won the preliminary round of the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson in the large broadcasting hall of the Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt, and on March 21, 1964, she was allowed to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 1964 in the Tivolis Concert Hall in Copenhagen. With her chanson-like title, written by Nils Nobach, you get used to the beautiful so quickly took 13th and last place without - like three other entries in the competition - having received a single point from the juries. She was the first artist to achieve a zero-point result for Germany. Before that, she had prevailed in the German preliminary round against Gitta Lind and Fred Bertelmann .

After the singing competition it became quiet about the singer. In 1964 she married the night club owner Toni Otto and at that time lived in Wuppertal-Elberfeld, later in Düsseldorf. She ran several catering establishments, then in the early 1980s a fashion boutique in Munich-Schwabing on Hohenzollernstrasse. Most recently she was the owner of an antique shop in Munich's Türkenstrasse until 1997. She has lived in Sofia, the city of her birth, since 1989. In 2007 Nora Nova presented herself to the public as a talk guest after a decade-long absence.

In 2001, Nova co-founded the National Movement for Stability and Progress .

Their only hit, Men There's a Dime a Lot , was covered by the Berlin pop group Ideal in 1980 during Neue Deutsche Welle .
