Michael Schulte (born April 30, 1990 in Eckernförde ) is a German singer-songwriter . He first became known for posting cover versions of successful songs on his YouTube channel. He reached third place in the singing casting show The Voice of Germany in 2012 and released his most successful album to date, Wide Awake , in the same year . 2018 he represented with the song You Let Me Walk Alone Germany at the Euro Vision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon , reaching fourth place there.

Youth and private life

Schulte grew up in Lindau an der Schlei and moved to Dollerup near Flensburg when he was eleven . In 2009 he graduated from Duborg-Skolen , the Danish high school in Flensburg, and speaks fluent Danish as well as German . Then he did his community service . He has been married since June 2018 and lives with his wife in Buxtehude . The couple had a son in August 2018.

YouTube activity

Since February 2008 he has been regularly uploading cover versions of current songs to the Internet video portal YouTube. In these, he usually accompanies himself with the guitar . In total, his videos have been viewed over 50 million times. His most watched video is the cover version of the song Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye and Kimbra , sung with Max Giesinger , which has been viewed over 4.6 million times. In April 2010 he signed a management contract with viva la media GmbH. In August 2010 he signed a label deal with Weinstein Media. In June 2011 he was on stage with the singer Rea Garvey , who had previously discovered him on YouTube, at the Kieler Woche .

Participation in The Voice of Germany

From the end of 2011 he took part in the singing casting show The Voice of Germany . At the blind auditions , he was selected by Garvey, who served as a juror and vocal coach on the show. He then qualified for the live shows that will take place in early 2012. His cover version of the Radiohead song Creep from the first live show then reached number 62 in the German charts . Michael Schulte moved into the final of the four best participants and came in third on February 10, 2012. With his title Carry Me Home he then reached the top 10 of the German charts. From February to March 2012 he accompanied Garvey on his I Can't Stand the Silence tour, where he presented his single Carry Me Home and performed the musical song Feeling Good together with Garvey .

Further career

In June 2012, Schulte signed a contract with the Very Us Records label of WVG Medien GmbH. In September and October 2012 he toured Germany with Max Giesinger. Schulte's album Wide Awake entered the media control newcomer charts at number 1. Rea Garvey wrote the song Beautiful Life for this album , the rest of the songs he wrote alone or with other songwriters. In December 2012 he released his EP Grow Old with Me including his second single You Said You'd Grow Old with Me from his album Wide Awake .

Schulte was on the Grow Old with Me Solo Acoustic Tour in spring 2013 and presented his album across Germany. He played a total of 29 concerts, including one in Vienna . In November 2013 he released the Christmas album My Christmas Classics , on which he presented twelve Christmas classics in a new look, in addition to his own song. In November and December he also accompanied the British boy band Blue in the opening act for their Germany tour.

In February 2014 Schulte released his first single, Rock and Scissors, from his studio album The Arising , which was released in October 2014. In May 2014 he released his EP Thoughts including the second single of the same name from the album. From November he will present his album on a Germany-wide tour. In August 2014 he was awarded the PlayAward in the music category at the VideoDays in Cologne. From March 2017 he was seen in the role of Micha in the three-part ZDFneo television series Neomaniacs . In April 2017 he released the album Hold the Rhythm .

In February 2018 he took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 Our song for Lisbon . With a maximum of 36 points, he prevailed against five other applicants and represented Germany at the ESC in Lisbon. He reached fourth place with 340 points.

On June 23, 2018, the radio play and album for the project Die Kinder der toten Stadt - music drama against oblivion was released . Schulte sings and speaks the main male role of Albert. The play tells of the children imprisoned in the Theresienstadt ghetto , their life there and their murder in the Nazi death camps .
