Still the same sky is a song from the music theater play Die Kinder der toten Stadt , which was initially interpreted by the German pop singer Jade Schulz and later released as a single in a duet with the German synth-pop singer Peter Heppner .

Creation and artwork

The song was written jointly by the songwriter Thomas Auerswald and the composer Lars Hesse. The latter was also responsible for the production of the piece, while Hesse was also responsible for the programming. The mixing and mastering was done by David Janus. The recordings were made under the direction of sound engineers Ulrich Bannenberg and Maurice Stute. All production steps were created in the Paderborn Lava Studios. Still the same sky was released under the LAVA Jam music label and distributed through EMI Music Publishing and Sony / ATV Music Publishing .

On the cover of the maxi single - in addition to the artist names and song titles - the three performers of the songs on it can be seen. The cover is divided into four equal-sized squares. A portrait of Peter Heppner can be seen in the upper left corner, a portrait of Jade Schulz in the upper left corner and a portrait of Michael Schulte in the lower left corner . The portraits were taken during the vocal recordings and are all in black and white . In the lower right corner are the artist names and song titles in white letters on a red background. Directly below it is also the lettering of the project “The children of the dead city”.

Publication and promotion

The first release of Still the Same Sky took place - in a solo version by Jade Schulz - as part of the musical theater play The Children of the Dead City on June 22, 2018. The release of a maxi-single followed around five months later on November 9, 2018. The single appeared as a double A single for download with the second A side alone . The song alone does not come from Heppner and Schulz, but is interpreted by Michael Schulte . Both the album versions and the single versions of both songs can be found on the single. The album version of Immer noch der Same Himmel is the solo version by Schulz, the single version is the duet by Heppner and Schulz.

In order to promote the single, the project advertised the piece on its various social media channels almost daily . For the first time it was announced on October 22, 2018 that Still the Same Sky will be released as a single. A snippet of the piece was also published for this purpose . One day before the single was released, a live version was published on the project's YouTube channel, which was sung by the Paderborn singer Denise Socaciu during an information event.

background information

Still the same sky is part of the musical theater play The Children of the Dead City , an allegorical tale about the children imprisoned in Theresienstadt , their lives there and their murder in the Nazi death camps . The true story on which the piece is based is based on the last days of the composer Hans Krása , who was brought to Theresienstadt in 1942 and was ordered there to rehearse and perform his children's opera Brundibár with the imprisoned children. On the one hand, cultural events in the city were used to mislead foreign observers that the Jewish city population was doing well and lacking for nothing. On the other hand, a documentary about life in Theresienstadt was planned in order to convey this impression with the help of film. After the recordings for the propaganda film , which, in addition to many scenes of an allegedly pleasant life in Theresienstadt, staged the children's opera and other musical performances, almost all of the participants were murdered: the children, the composer and the director of the film documentary, Kurt Gerron .

The piece can be found in the second of five acts. In this the composer is quoted as commanding officer. The commandant gives his “brutal” orders in a “pantomime”. However, the composer interprets it as he would like to understand it: as hope. The orders tell him to direct the children of the camp to the performance of an opera that they would like to record for a film documentary about the “comfortable life” in the camp. The commandant gives the composer seven days. The composer leaves the office and tells his wife about it. His wife supports him in the assumption that this might save the children. But later she admits to herself that she is afraid of being so much more realistic than her husband.

After the piece was initially only to be found on the album of the music theater piece, it was decided to publish a single for the 80th anniversary of the November pogroms in 1938 and the associated unspeakable suffering of all people who were considered Jews under the Nuremberg Laws .

content

The lyrics to Immer noch der same Himmel are in German . The music was composed by Lars Hesse, the text written by Thomas Auerswald. Musically, the song moves in the area of pop music . The tempo is 120 beats per minute . In terms of content, the piece is intended to remind people that the world has not been the same since the time of National Socialism and the hostility towards Jews that took place there , and to warn humanity that something like this will never happen again.

The song begins with the first verse, which is sung by Heppner. The first verse is followed by a bridge and, for the first time, the refrain , both of which are sung by Heppner and Schulz in a duet. The second stanza is sung by Schulze. The second verse is followed by the common bridge and the refrain, which is sung twice by the two performers at the end - with a short break in between.

“Like a sea full of stars in the night.
But if once in a hundred years.
A person here raises his gaze.

Is it still the same sky for him?
Is it still the big tent for him?
Is it still the same earth for us?
But it will never be the same world again. "

- Bridge and refrain, original excerpt
