Glass Garden is a song by German Dark Wave - band Goethe's heirs , in cooperation with the German synthpop musician Peter Heppner . The piece is the second single from their eighth studio album Nothing stays as it was .

Creation and artwork

The song was written by Goethe's two heirs, Oswald Henke and Mindy Kumbalek, Peter Heppner and Jürgen Jansen. The single was specially arranged, recorded, mixed and produced by the latter; some sound recordings were made together with Axel Ermes. The single was released under the music label Zeitbombe, published by Budde Zwei Edition and Candyland Edition and distributed by Indigo . The recordings and production work took place in the Hamburg Candyland recording studio. On the white cover of the maxi single - next to the artist name and song title - a flower made of glass can be seen. On the cover of a limited maxi single, the image appeared with a black background.

Publication and promotion

Glasgarten was first published on December 22, 2001 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In addition to the single version, the regular maxi single also includes the album version and a so-called "dream version" of Glasgarten , as well as a reduced version of the song Missing Dream and a music video for the previous single, Der Eisturm , as a B-side . A “limited edition” of the maxi single released at the same time also contains two live recordings of the songs The Door in the Past and Pascal laughs .

background information

Glass garden was a piece of Goethe's heirs, which was created long before its publication. It was not to be found on any album before, but was only played at a few concerts . Mindy Kumbalek stated that something was always missing for this piece. They were looking for a distinctive, beautiful voice that can also sing properly and simply represents a counterpart to Oswald Henke's spoken chant . You came across Peter Heppner because he had a warm, beautiful voice. Goethe's heirs sent a demo recording of the song to Heppner, who a few weeks later sent a CD back to Glasgarten with his own ideas . The single version differs greatly from the album version, which is due to the fact that initially only one vocal contribution was planned for the album.

In 2018, in an interview with Radio Schwarze Welle , Heppner said that the immediate commitment to cooperation was on a "funny" background. It was very "funny" because the very first book he read in his life was a children's book - one about a little cork man and his world, which is made entirely of glass. That was the crazy thing, when Oswald came up with the idea, had been a completely common idea of a garden made of glass for 20 years. Heppner had to do it just because he was so familiar with it. He grew up with this idea of glass gardens and glass cities, glass forests and glass worlds, etc. and immediately felt at home in the song.

content

The lyrics to Glasgarten are written in German. The music was written by Jürgen Jansen and Mindy Kumbalek, the text by Oswald Henke and Peter Heppner. Musically, the song moves in the field of synth pop . The song begins with the chorus, which is sung by Heppner. This is followed by the first stanza by Henke, which is interpreted in spoken chanting, while Heppner's voice can be heard almost continuously in the background. The following refrain is interpreted by both, with the main focus on Heppner. Both sing a different text, with Henke only being noticeable in the background. This is followed by the second stanza and the third chorus in the same way. The third verse is sung solo by Heppner before the last common refrain follows.

“Made entirely of glass, cold as ice,
every tree in the glass garden.
Flowers as pure as crystal,
every tone in the glass garden. "

- Refrain Heppner, original excerpt

“Only the moon shows the way to morning,
allows the sun a new day.
In the glass garden the moon kisses the light. "

- Refrain Henke, original excerpt
