Confessions & Doubts Tour -

In the Confessions & Doubts tour is the sixth solo tour of the German synth pop - singer Peter Heppner .

background

General information

The Confessions & Doubts Tour was Heppner's sixth tour as a solo artist. The tour lasted five and a half months and took place in two sections. The first section of the tour took place from November 15 to December 16, 2018 and took Heppner and his accompanying band through twelve German cities and once to Zurich in Switzerland . In Switzerland it was Heppner's second concert as a solo artist after an appearance at the Black Ball . The black ball also took place at the X-TRA in Zurich. The second section of the tour took place from April 11th to April 28th, 2019 and took Heppner and his accompanying band through seven German cities and three times to Russia. In Russia, Heppner performed for the fourth time in his career in Moscow and Saint Petersburg , and in Yekaterinburg he played for the first time in his career. The tour thus consisted of a total of 23 concerts. This surpassed the My Heart of Stone Tour , which at the time comprised 21 concerts, making the Confessions & Doubts Tour the largest series of concerts in Heppner's career.

The stage set consisted of three elongated banners placed behind the band. The cover picture for Confessions & Doubts was on one banner , and the other two were each labeled with “Heppner” and “Confessions & Doubts”. As a concert organizer you could win Protain Concerts for yourself.

On March 1, 2018, Heppner announced for the first time on Facebook that he would go on tour with his live band at the end of the year. Initially, the tour was advertised under the title Confessions Tour 2018 , the working title of the album that was being worked on at the time. On June 22nd, 2018, Heppner announced that the title of the album had been changed from “Confessions” to “Confessions & Doubts” and thus the title of the concert series also changed to Confessions & Doubts Tour 2018 . The tour was received differently by the audience. While the concerts in the Hanover Music Center or the Kulttempel in Oberhausen were sold out in advance, the Wizemann in Stuttgart could only be half filled with 500 visitors. Although not all concerts were sold out, it was announced before the actual end of the tour on December 7, 2018 that the tour would be expanded by seven concerts in Germany in April 2019. On December 28, 2018 it was announced that the second tour section will be expanded to include three concerts in Russia.

Special occurrences

On December 15, 2018, a special event occurred at the concert in the New Town Hall in Langen . In the audience was the Holocaust contemporary witness and survivor of the Theresienstadt concentration camp, Edith Erbrich. You and Heppner met during a joint appearance in the ZDF service magazine. Heppner spoke about the musical theater piece The Children of the Dead City , in which he played a role. The children of the dead city is a story about the Theresienstadt ghetto in which the children in particular are at the center of the action. Erbrich was invited as a contemporary witness and former inmate. Erbrich and Heppner kept in touch from this point on. Surprisingly, Erbrich announced that he would be in her home town of Langen for the concert. In the course of this, Heppner decided to play the song Theresienstadt: Behind the Wall - which was normally not part of the tour program - in her honor . Heppner himself was inspired to write the piece through his participation in The Children of the Dead City , which also tells the story of Erbrich.

On June 22, 2018, Heppner announced that the German electro-pop band Leichtmatrose will be accompanying him in the opening act of all concerts in the first section of the tour . The band also accompanies Heppner at all Germany concerts during the second tour section. Heppner's well-known companion Joachim Witt , who also recorded the intro, is considered the band's discoverer and mentor . Ordinary Sailor's setlist consisted of a collection of titles they released in recent years. There was no special presentation album during the tour, with more than half of the titles on the last studio album Heile Welt . The band played the following nine songs:

  1. Jerusalem
  2. Fate can be a lousy asshole
  3. Goodbye Marie
  4. Better not
  5. When night falls in Paris
  6. Jonny found happiness with the stars (to be different)
  7. That's the taste of being free
  8. Over here in the ditch
  9. Chill Indians

During the tour, Heppner was again accompanied by his live band, which since the My Heart of Stone Tour has consisted of Achim Färber (drums), Carsten Klatte (guitar) and Dirk Riegner (keyboard). With the exception of one concert, all concerts were played with this line-up. At the final concert on December 16, 2018 in Cologne's Live Music Hall , Färber had to cancel because he was playing a concert with his band Automat that evening. Färber was replaced by Lars Watermann . Watermann jumped in for Färber at a concert on the My Heart of Stone Tour , which at the time had to cancel due to illness. In addition, Watermann was already active as a drummer during Heppner's first solo tour in 2009. On the club tour in the following year, Watermann was replaced by Färber.

Setlist

During the tour, Heppner and his live band presented 27 different titles. The repertoire consisted of an electropop set with German and English-language songs. The size of the set list varied between 24 and 27 songs on the individual evenings. After last year's tour 30 Years of Heppner - with 22 and 23 songs respectively - represented the largest concert program of Heppner's solo career, this concert series surpassed this.

Two thirds of the setlist consisted of pieces from the new albums Confessions & Doubts and TanzZwang, as well as a small selection of songs from his first two solo albums, a compilation of older guest contributions and Wolfsheim pieces. From the third studio album, Confessions & Doubts , Heppner played all the pieces, with the exception of Chance and Give me a reason . The latter, however, was already part of Peter Heppner Akustik and was presented at the time as one of two new pieces alongside Good Things Break ; Chance, however, was not played on any tour up to this point. The song Theresienstadt: Behind the Wall was also not planned as part of the program. The band only played it one evening in honor of the present Holocaust contemporary witness and survivor of the Theresienstadt concentration camp, Edith Erbrich, on December 15, 2018 in Langen . With Best Things in Life and I Will Hurt You , two tracks were also missing from the remix album TanzZwang . The song “ Fremd in this Land” was an integral part of the tour, and the track was played twice at the start of the tour in the Hamburg market hall . First a short version of the piece was played in the middle of the concert, later the song in its full version was part of the encore. From the second studio album My Heart of Stone , the band played the two tracks Deserve to Be Alone and Meine Welt , the former only being presented at the start of the tour in the Hamburg market hall. From his debut album solo , Heppner played with Alone and That Goes Over ... also two pieces. The titles Die Flut , Leben… I Feel You and We are we are past guest posts. The titles No Back , Artificial Worlds , Once in a Lifetime and The Sparrows and the Nightingales come from the Wolfsheim repertoire.

During the tour, not only the number of titles played varied, but also their schedule. The beginning of the show was always ignored and consisted of the opening song Unloveable and Alone and My World . Before the concert at the Factory in Magdeburg , Heppner and his live band played two encores with a total of five to six titles. From the concert at the Hirsch in Nuremberg , only one encore with four titles was played. The tracks that were previously part of the encore were now played during the main part and were therefore not omitted. Parts of the encores differed from evening to evening, only the titles Das geht über ... , Kein Zurück und Künstliche Welten were always part of the encore. The song Herz (Metropolis) was - with one exception in Nuremberg - always part of the encore. After the last four years, the Anna Sten -Cover I do not know to whom I belong always made the concert a strike, piece by was The passes ... detached.

reception

  • After the tour kicked off in Hamburg's market hall, the German television broadcaster Sat.1 broadcast a report on the news program 17:30 Sat.1 . The format reported that the approximately 800 fans were enthusiastic about the concert, for which they also obtained audience votes. Heppner - in a manner typical for him - ensured a good mood that evening with melancholy.
  • Marius Meyer from monkeypress.com described ordinary seaman as a "worthwhile preliminary program" which was able to convince the audience. From initially skeptical looks in the audience, the band was able to inspire Heppner's fans more and more in the course of their performance. You can be sure that the fan base has increased with the appearance. Heppner later opened the show with the quiet opener Unloveable . The following loneliness heralded a “best of program”, during which one would have found oneself right in the middle of the artist's long history. A history that leaves an impression of timelessness. One wonders, for example, that said being alone was published ten years ago. The Sparrows and the Nightingales, played quite early, underpin the impression of timelessness. With songs like these and more recent pieces in his luggage, Heppner managed to keep the tension going right through to the end. With a medley in the middle of the concert, some of the pieces from the new albums were "skillfully" merged, with the audience having already shown themselves to be confident in the text. Heppner was seen as having “obvious fun” during the concert and it was clear to the band that they were now very well-rehearsed. Given these conditions, it was no wonder that the regular set was not over yet. The band came back twice for three encores each time, with which they continued to delight the audience. The hours in Huxley's new world were "definitely" nice, from the beginning of the opening act to the end of the main show. It was an all-round successful evening.
  • Christof Hammer from the Stuttgarter Nachrichten described the concert as “100 minutes of good old school electro pop”. Either the music marches in the New Wave style of the late 1980s through brisk "tempos" and "pretty melodies" or the sound "meander" in "icy beauty" through "melancholy", "melancholy" and "romance". Hammer described the depiction of Heppner behind a standing desk with a songbook as a kind of "vocal performance" that took some getting used to, which was more reminiscent of a reading than a pop concert. Musically, Heppner has shown himself to be true to himself for 30 years, but the sovereign “remaining true to oneself” clearly triumphs over the compulsion to constantly “reinvent oneself” on this evening.
