Dance compulsion -

Dance compulsion is the first remix album of the German synth pop - singer Peter Heppner . The special thing about this is that all titles are new compositions that were published directly in remix versions. The studio versions were published at the same time on TanzZwang (Originals) in the "Limited Fanbox" for Confessions & Doubts .

Creation and artwork

Emergence

With one exception, all of the lyrics on TanzZwang come from Heppner himself, only the lyrics to the title Hermann Hesse: Im Nebel is not his. Heppner was also responsible for the compositions, which he carried out together with two other co-composers. Nine of the eleven compositions were created with the help of Heppner's long-time companion and live band member Dirk Riegner . The other two were created together with the Berlin music producer Alex Lys. While Riegner was already active as a composer on all of Heppner's studio albums to date, Lys contributed compositions for a Heppner sound carrier for the second time after Confessions & Doubts . The co-composers were responsible for the musical composition, while Heppner was mainly responsible for the vocal compositions. With the exception of I Will Hurt You , all tracks on the album were produced by Riegner. I Will Hurt You was produced by Temple. Riegner produced the title Best Things in Life together with Salt & Waves. All titles of the standard work were mixed by different artists . The album includes remixes by well-known artists such as Apoptygma Berzerk , Riegner and Schiller as well as a remix of Drangsal auf TanzZwang (Originals) in the "Limited Fanbox" for Confessions & Doubts . The mastering took place under the direction of Robin Schmidt from 24-96 Mastering in Karlsruhe . TanzZwang was published under the music label RCA Germany , published by Edition Drakkar Publishing (9 titles), Sony / ATV Music Publishing (2 titles) and Suhrkamp Verlag (1 title) and distributed by Sony Music Entertainment .

Artwork

The album cover should represent a file . On the left side of the cover picture there is a dark caricature of Heppner's upper body - from face to chest. Lines of text from the album can be found in white letters on the rest of the cover. The artist's name "Heppner" is also printed in white at the top on the left. The background of the entire cover picture is kept reddish. Details on the file can be found at the bottom. It contains the following information:

  • Case name ( English for ' case name ') : TanzZwang
  • Assigned to (English for 'assigned to') : Peter Heppner
  • File number (English for ' file number ') : 19075890512-3 | 2018

The same artwork concept is also on the cover of the studio album Confessions & Doubts , which was released at the same time, as well as the single What remains? to find. Inside the CD is a 22-page booklet in which all the lyrics, further photos and all contributors can be found. The photographs of Heppner were taken by the Berlin photographer Mathias Bothor, further image recordings and the artwork came from Ulrike Rank again - as with various Heppner publications. For the first time, images from the photo shoot with Bothor were published by Heppner on June 7, 2018. These were two black-and-white portraits by Heppner that were published for the first time for promotional purposes. The cover was first presented on August 9, 2018.

Publication and promotion

TanzZwang was first published on September 28, 2018. The conventional version of the album was released on CD, download and vinyl and contains eleven new remix recordings. The album was actually supposed to be released a week earlier on September 21, 2018. When the "Limited Fanbox" was put together for the studio album Confessions & Doubts , which was released at the same time, unforeseeable problems arose which led to a delay that could not be made up. Heppner wanted to publish all album formats at the same time in the previously announced versions and for this reason postponed the publication for a week. On August 9, 2018, Heppner announced the final track list for TanzZwang for the first time . One day later, the official press release of the music label Sony / RCA was published. A few days later, the pre-order of the album started on August 14, 2018.

At the same time as Confessions & Doubts and TanzZwang were released, a “Limited Fanbox” for Confessions & Doubts was also released . This consists of four CDs, three stickers with the cover pictures for Confessions & Doubts , What remains? and TanzZwang , two posters with the two cover pictures for Confessions & Doubts , a pin with the cover picture for the “Standard Version” of Confessions & Doubts and a hand-signed autograph card. The first CD is the studio album Confessions & Doubts . The second CD Confessions & Doubts (Instrumentals) contains instrumental versions of all the songs on the studio album. The third CD is the remix album TanzZwang, which was released at the same time . The fourth CD TanzZwang (Originals) contains studio versions of some of the tracks from the remix album. Confessions & Doubts (instrumentals) and TanzZwang (originals) can only be purchased in conjunction with the “Limited Fanbox”; no independent publications were made. The fan box consists of a total of 40 titles.

background information

Production process

After the release of his second studio album My Heart of Stone on May 18, 2012, Heppner went on his My Heart of Stone Tour of the same name at the end of the year . After the first part of the tour, Heppner began working on a third studio album. A composition session with his long-time companion and live band member Dirk Riegner took place in the Thommy Hein Studio. On January 31, 2014, the end of the fifth composing session with Riegner, there were so many demo recordings on the books that Heppner found out for the first time in a fan survey that he was interested in two full-fledged albums. A double album wouldn't make sense in his opinion. By May 2014, Heppner completed further tour sections and a total of eight composing sessions with Riegner. After the composition session was over, Heppner initially took a break from production. He bridged the rest of the year with concerts such as his own acoustic tour and guest appearances such as at Camouflage . At the end of January 2015, Heppner began working on the more intensive text work again at short notice before going on an acoustic tour again.

At the beginning of 2016 it became quieter around Heppner, who took a break. In the summer of 2016, Heppner announced on his Facebook page that he had been suffering from the heart disease hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HOCM) since he was 16 . This disease was only diagnosed two and a half years earlier, after Heppner was hospitalized with an inflammation of the heart muscle , previously it was wrongly assumed to be suffering from asthma . In the spring of 2016, he underwent an operation to remove the HOCM, which went without complications . As the reason for the decision to go public with his illness only after about 30 years, Heppner stated that he did not gain attention through a "pity bonus" and as a kind of "ailing musician", but through his art, music and Texts wanted to be known. By the end of the year, Heppner had made a few festival appearances. In 2017, Heppner celebrated its 30th stage anniversary and for this reason went on the 30 Years of Heppner Tour at the end of the year .

After the last two years due to health problems and the celebrations for the 30th anniversary on the stage, things have been a little quieter in terms of album production, Heppner shared some impressions from the recording studio for the first time on March 10, 2018 . Among other things, he uploaded pictures from the said recording studio and in the same post confirmed the start of the vocal recordings and the planned release of the album before the tour begins. On March 13, 2018, Heppner finished the first singing session. On April 11, 2018, it was announced that Heppner had signed a new contract with the music label RCA Germany and is therefore no longer under contract with Polydor . The final production began on May 24, 2018 in Berlin under the direction of Alex Lys. On June 15, 2018, Heppner announced that they had celebrated the mountain festival and that half of the production was done. During an interview with Ingo Nommsen in the ZDF service magazine Volle Kanne on August 6, 2018, Heppner confirmed that he had just finished production.

Musical difference to Confessions & Doubts and naming

In an interview with Laut.de , Heppner revealed that they had in the back of their minds that it would be very interesting to do a DJ set for two. They thought of a set with live singing as a kind of "USP". You can also dance there with small cutlery in order to implement pieces that already exist. But then they would have asked themselves why they don't write new pieces right away - very special pieces, also for dance standards. Songs that literally force you to dance, including them. This is how the running gag : "Remember: dance compulsion" came about. So it was only natural that it became the title of the album. Heppner also added that they had approached the work for this as if for a “dance sampler” and that there had been conversations with other music labels in between, so that it would have been possible to publish TanzZwang under a label other than Confessions & Doubts . Ultimately, Markus Hartmann, head of RCA Germany, found the idea “cool” and so Heppner stayed with RCA with this publication. The concept for TanzZwang consisted of the fact that each piece could be found by a different producer or mixer . The only connecting element is his composition and his voice. In eight out of ten pieces, he was not involved at all. Two titles ( Best Things in Life and I Will Hurt You ) had taken place around Alex Lys, the producer of Confessions & Doubts , so he was closer. With two or three pieces by others, Heppner would have had to get used to it himself. He might have done a few things differently, but that's "okay" too. Influences should come from different directions. It was interesting to let go. His work in the studio can be put under the motto “ control compulsion ”. He is not like that in life, he is only a " control freak " when it comes to his music .

The specifications for the various producers were such that the producers did not have to produce the pieces like a classic remix. They shouldn't have gone too far from the original because it might be the only version there would be. Because in the production phase it was not yet clear that there would be a "fan box" with the original versions. The original versions that were sent to the producers can be found on the bonus CD TanzZwang (Originals) in the Confessions & Doubts (Limited Fanbox) . It said: “You make the original version in your own style, but with the basic structure of the song, please. So you don't have the very great freedom that you otherwise have. Please pay attention to things like the order of the text, don't just take any fragments, everything has to be in the text because it should stay close to the original. "The next requirement was:" Produce it like a single, whatever you mean by it. Produce it like the main piece. ”Those were the only requirements. The selection of the remix partners was not made by Heppner himself, this was done by RCA Germany. Heppner justified this with the answer that she had no idea about Dance , they were “more competent ” there than he was. If someone is more competent in an area than he is, then he likes to trust. He just wanted a veto . So the label made the selection what it found “cool” because they had a much broader overview. He only said for one piece ( Hermann Hesse: Im Nebel ) that he would like Dirk Riegner to do the remix. Otherwise the selection should cover a wide variety of areas. That succeeded well - it included funny to crazy things.

content

All the lyrics on the album are written in German or English and, with one exception, come from Heppner himself. The lyrics to Hermann Hesse: Im Nebel is from Hermann Hesse . This is a setting of Hesse's eponymous poem Im Nebel . The special thing about the track selection is that the regular album consists of new compositions, which were published directly in remix versions. Eight of the ten different titles were published in their studio version on TanzZwang (Originals) . TanzZwang (Originals) is only available as part of the "Limited Fanbox" for Confessions & Doubts . The only tracks that were not recorded in the studio are the songs Best Things in Life and I Will Hurt You .

Musically, the record moves in the field of dark waves , electropop and synth pop . Sony / RCA compared the sound as reverberation to the “signet sounds” of the 1970s. The sound was compared to that of a Moog or Prophet synthesizer as well as the sounds of the German band Kraftwerk or the French musician Jean-Michel Jarre . The posture of the plate, in turn, pays homage to the London scene in the early 1980s. It could also have been created “off Portobello Road ”, or under the aegis of 4AD and the many other independent labels of the time, which produced music groups like The Cure and New Order . It is the democratic view of the means of music production that Confessions & Doubts - sounding contemporary - spans an arc between the early 1980s and 2018. Heppner was supported vocally by the Esslingen singer Volkan Durmaz for the song “ Fremd im Eigen Land” .

tour

The Confessions & Doubts Tour was Heppner's sixth tour as a solo artist. The tour lasted just over a month, from November 15 to December 16, 2018. It took Heppner and his accompanying band through twelve German cities and once to Zurich in Switzerland . Heppner was accompanied by his live band, which since the My Heart of Stone Tour has consisted of Achim Färber (drums), Carsten Klatte (guitar) and Dirk Riegner (keyboard). During the tour, Heppner and his live band presented 27 different titles. The repertoire consisted of an electropop set with German and English-language songs. Two thirds of the setlist consisted of pieces from the new albums Confessions & Doubts and TanzZwang, as well as a small selection of songs from his first two solo albums, a compilation of older guest contributions and Wolfsheim pieces. The German electro-pop band Leichtmatrose played in the opening act of all concerts . Although not all concerts were sold out, it was announced before the end of the tour on December 7, 2018 that the tour would be expanded by seven concerts in Germany in April 2019.

Single releases

An official single from TanzZwang did not take place. On October 1st, 2018, Standing Tall (Sand & Pfeffer Remix) and on November 15th, 2018 with … und ich tanz '(Latches Mix), two video clips were released. The music video for Standing Tall (Sand & Pfeffer Remix) is a pure lyric video, in which the currently sung lyrics can typically be seen. To ... and I dance '(Latches Mix) a real music video was released, which was shot on November 4th, 2018 in the SchwuZ (SchwulenZentrum) in Berlin . On the one hand, this shows Heppner, who sings the song at SchwuZ, sometimes dancing, accompanied by a light show. On the other hand, the Lithuanian dancer Andreus can be seen dancing through Berlin as well as SchwuZ. As with Dream of You , House of the Three Suns and What remains? again Marcus Sternberg .

Reviews

  • Roman Jasiek from the German-language e-zine Avalost Times rated TanzZwang nine out of ten points. In the beginning, Fremd is available in this country as a so-called VIZE remix, which lets the piece shine a little in the splendor of conventional EDM tracks. Heppner is picking up the still hot topic of refugees . “I've lived here for many years, I've always been at home, but now it's changing so much and I don't know my way around anymore. Foreign languages and faces, old friends no longer there, I wish it were like it used to be again, he sings here. ”Will he sing to the mouths of all the concerned citizens here? Hardly likely. An artist who takes part in the music theater play The Children of the Dead City will hardly have changed sides spontaneously. And Theresienstadt: Behind the wall from the sister album, I finally took a clear position. But Heppner has once again changed perspective. The voices of those who are afraid of alleged foreign infiltration are always loud and loud. But how it feels when a refugee has to cope with a new country, this question is heard much less often. Far too often it is nothing more than a low whisper that is drowned out in the rest of the din. Heppner put them here. And he makes it loud with the means of a long-range artist. A difficult subject, indeed, but well packed. "I am not afraid of difficult topics, I am not afraid of adult titles," says Heppner and Jasiek is grateful that Heppner takes this position. More than sometimes it would be desirable if many other musicians had similar views and represented them aloud with the means at their disposal.
Incidentally, the setting of Hermann Hesse's poem Nebel , which Dirk Riegner was responsible for mixing, is also heavy and mature . With its bitter melancholy, the number would have fit better on the other album. Riegner of all people does not meet the requirement to live up to the album title. With such a melancholy text, narrow dance could hardly have been the request. It is a bit of a bridge that connects the two albums. If, however, exactly this should have been the concern - "Dirk Riegner, you clever fox, you!"
Overall, TanzZwang lives up to its name. All Is Shadow, for example, was edited by Apoptygma Berzerk and sounds exactly as one would expect. I Will Hurt You in the “Temple Mix” is remarkable , which at first sounds somewhat oriental, but at least sounds crazy. Also nice: "Once Again". Otherwise Heppner likes to trumpet on a Schiller release, here it is the other way around insofar as Schiller contributed this mix. And that sounds as you would expect: “Electronic, dreamy, with a lot of reverb and very wide synth pads that you can almost let yourself down on. A bit like falling backwards into a mountain of cotton wool. ” Jasiek also liked the subtle house-inspired Yann Lauren remix by Sedate Yourself , but it might not be met with undivided approval. There would be another touch of EDM at the end of this album in the form of the Sand - & - Pepper remix by Standing Tall . This piece, positioned exactly at this point, means that not only TanzZwang can be heard in a continuous loop without causing a kind of break in the sound, but also works excellently as a starting point if you want to continue with Confessions & Doubts . The only negative is the publication policy. The release of two albums, which one could very well have brought onto the market as a double album, should at least be questioned.
  • Gabi Grimme from the German-language music portal darkmusicworld.de rated TanzZwang positively. The first remix for ... and I dance exactly to the specifications of a danceable piece. It exudes a "unhealthy" happiness and the feet would move with ease. The second one is not that straightforward and surprising with alienated “voice effects” that give the piece a strange “touch”. All Is Shadow have packed this typical melancholy note into a “galloping drive” with a “hypnotic character”. No melodic flourishes would water down this dry electronic part in “ synth pop style ”. Best Things in Life let you hear a touch of ambient with an ethnic rhythm that sounds like summer, sun and freedom. In a thematically appropriate manner, Fremd in this country is designed with a gloomy atmosphere, which does not prevent us from equipping it with elements of the EDM in accordance with the given topic “TanzZwang” . This would make this song "club-friendly" despite the difficult lyrics. Hermann Hesse falls out of line : In the fog . Actually this is not a “dance track”. It is melancholic, gloomy & the composition has a psychedelic touch. Of course you could also dance to slow tracks like this, but that would be more in the " shoegazing style" with the restrained expression of heartache and despair. I will hurt you is completely different . Electronically distorted "Ethno-Voices" and a deep, dull beat add drama to this title, which now seems like a slowed-down " Drum'n'Bass Track". Just One Word is a mix in the “dark electro style” with a broad, gloomy “synthetic carpet” and hard, electronic beats. This title reminds me of the old Wolfsheim songs.
Schiller as a well-known musician colleague should not be missing on this album. Remember the joint projects Dream of You and Life… I Feel You . With Once Again , this time it is not so clearly the irresistible “melodic genesis”, but rather the instrumental spread of an orchestral “emotional painting” by means of the “Schiller-typical”, epic, soft and organic synth sounds. Sedate Yourself pursues a completely different direction with a “ trip-hop touch” and complex rhythms, which spreads “lounge feeling” with its ambient keynote. With Standing Tall , another “good mood remix” follows , which is filigree orchestrated with implied “ harp plucking ”, soft trumpet sounds and “bouncing rhythm”, which is in contrast to Heppner's vocal line. The abrupt end that would end the album with a question mark would come as a bit of a surprise.
It is not unusual for songs to be passed on and published as remixes for further processing, but here this was done with a "style-forming consequence" because there is no original of these songs, but the remix represents the original. The intention of this work is to get the "chronic non-dancers" Heppner and Riegner to dance. Those who are a little less inhibited from dancing would get their money's worth with remixes from different branches of electronic dance music, whereby the selection of producers is already experimentally colored and covers a very broad and popular range of danceable electronic music. This experiment is quite interesting and shows once again that artistic cooperation always produces something exciting for the ears when it spans genres.
  • Marius Meyer from monkeypress described TanzZwang as a successful album with a very interesting concept and gave it an average of nine out of ten points. He rated the music with full points and the “musical line” with eight out of ten points. He wrote the following about this:
From the “gesture” of the opener ... and I even dance, one might feel reminded of Wolfsheim's Wundervoll , but on the whole the two versions of the piece seem more sophisticated. Dance-floor beats, catchy arrangements and thoughtful, optimistic recordings that all radiate joie de vivre. The third piece, All Is Shadow, is a powerful piece with a really strong “dance floor appeal”. One shouldn't be surprised if there would soon be dancing to this in the clubs. But then it would also be very serious, poetic and also musically very versatile. A stranger in this country, for example, seems to be danceable, but you notice the profound topic of who feels strange and why in this country. The piece is immediately followed by Hermann Hesse: Im Nebel , which has a mystical effect and is one of the rare successes in setting literature to music without being embarrassing. Heppner set his favorite poem to music here and delivered a convincing result in the Dirk Riegner Mix . Finally, the following I Will Hurt You has a completely different effect , which again sounds unusual, but with its oriental influences fits well with the requirement of “TanzZwang” to offer the broadest possible range. Once Again is a title that shows that it has once again proven itself to keep this co-production with Schiller. But it is not just the expected collaboration, it is the combination as a whole that is convincing. If you want the needle in the haystack, you might want to be told that the inner connection with “TanzZwang” is not always 100%, but that quickly becomes a minor matter.
  • Thomas Pilgrim from Plattentests.de did not rate the album as positive and only gave it four out of ten points. After the "collection of songs", which was released parallel to this album, no one should feel the urge for heartbreak, self-pity and broken relationships for the time being and instead should feel the need to give the best so that all the emotional rubbish might fall away soon. The moto is by no means: "Head out, dance?" To use the word "dumb umz-umz-dullness", but rather to celebrate the liberating moments in the club. Where "Sozius" Witt once and ... I run in arms, Heppner says twice at the beginning ... and I dance . Which only underlines the imperative undertone of TanzZwang . Presumably, not only dark-clad “bodies” twitch to this dynamic piece, which, thanks to the “trancey worm appendix” and “sonorous nasal baritone”, would confidently find its destination in a mix of latches. Even if it remains unclear why Pascal Reinhardt has always had to “ pitch ” an organ that does not require processing into the bottomless in the immediately following version of Heppner . All Is Shadow in its version by Apoptygma Berzerks Stephan Groth described Pilgrim as a "bombproof floor filler".
Nevertheless, one knows that Wolfsheim's “soul-caressing” qualities, even in “ up-tempo mode ”, have a predominantly melancholy mood - “electric dance in minor for chronic brooders”. So it doesn't surprise anyone that TanzZwang will soon switch from "dignified" fidgeting to brews with only discreet beats. And if, like in Fremd in this country, “feverish outbreaking analogue groove” and “migrant fate” are up for debate, the listener likes to wave something like that through. Not so, however, the indecisive “rumbling” Hermann Hesse setting Im Nebel or Best Things in Life including “pale” wisdom from the “chewing gum machine of existence”. Especially since the remixing of Salt & Waves sounds exactly the way one would prefer not to imagine their commissioned work for Wincent Weiss . And at the latest when Schiller Once Again not a-trap more than generous softener to tilt with "emulated" strings addition to the "fair-oiled" machine, this "dance compulsion" debunk over long distances as "compulsory exercise" with the power of a second last in the hole whistling cordless screwdriver . Pix Tom is doing his best with Just One Word shortly beforehand and is indeed bringing a "sharp, smacking monster" with a thick bass line to light, but this remix cannot prevent the shed from becoming increasingly empty. Pilgrim highlighted the two titles … und ich tanz '(Latches Mix) and Just One Word (PixTom Mix) as “highlights” .

Charts and chart placements

TanzZwang placed 96 in the first week of sales on the German midweek album Top 100 . However , the album missed an eventual chart entry into the German album Top 100 .
