background information

Maybe? is not the first collaboration between Jose Alvarez-Brill and Peter Heppner. In the past, Alvarez has often worked as a producer for Heppner's band project Wolfsheim . He also produced Heppner as a solo artist in advance. In 1998 he produced the single Die Flut von Witt / Heppner. In 2010, the two worked together again and released the promo single This Moment .

In the booklet to Alvarez Presents Zeitmaschine Remixed you can find the following statement from Alvarez about the collaboration with Heppner: “One of my greatest wishes has always been to write a song with Peter. We used to say we had to do something. But as it is, 13 years have passed, with 13 being my lucky number. It was a very intensive work on this piece, which we accomplished largely new creative workshop pH-Werk. These rooms were just being renovated and so we sat mostly at night between paint and Psppkartons with our basic studio technology and made concentrated music. We both had the same feeling: "It's like before, kind of good !!!" "

content

The lyrics to Maybe? is written in German. The music was written by Jose Alvarez-Brill and Henning Verlage, the text by Peter Heppner. Musically, the song moves in the area of dance pop . The composition combines modern music with poetry from the turn of the century . The song has two stanzas, a refrain between the stanzas and a repetitive one at the end of the song. The lyrics consist of a series of “maybe” statements or questions, some of which rhyme . The questions mainly deal with the topic of a love relationship.

"Maybe now and then
, maybe something new will start,
maybe for you and me,
maybe ..."

- Refrain, original excerpt

Music video

The music video for Maybe? was shot on September 7, 2005 and premiered in October. It shows how Heppner - singing with a camera - wanders through landscapes and meets people who, like himself, film themselves in certain places. Heppner films himself at a bus stop , in front of a brick wall (on which a large white heart has been painted) and in front of a large tree. On his hike he meets Alvarez-Brill, who is making a family video of himself, his wife and two children in front of their own home. Furthermore, he meets two women who are filming each other while modeling in front of a lake, a man who films himself during a monologue in a meadow, an older woman who puts on make- up on a park bench , a young person who films herself holding up at a ball and a blonde woman filming himself in a meadow against the backdrop of a bridge at dusk. This very woman meets Heppner at the end of the video and hands him the recordings she made. There is a small heart on the case of the cassette. The video ends with Heppner following the woman. The total length of the video is 3:50 minutes. As with Leben… I Feel You, the director was again Hans Hammers Jr. II. In addition, cameraman Ben Wolf and production manager Florian Buba worked on the video. The music video was produced by Luminus Film.

Reviews

The website depechemode.de describes the production as a reference to the current music landscape. It is a "solid" single that was produced without any major "rough edges" and goes straight to the ear. Lyrically, you give the listener scope for their own interpretations. In particular, the “Lite Remix” made by Northern Lite stood out, as the remix was played at a “more contemplative” pace and enriched with “distinctive synths”.
