Creation and artwork

The song was written by Tom Albrecht, José Alvarez-Brill, Dior da Silva, Peter Heppner and Marc Kaschke. The mixing, instrumentation, production, programming and the final engineering of the single was done by Alvarez-Brill and the producer trio 3typen (Albrecht, da Silva and Kaschke); whereby the producer trio only acted as co-producers. Mark “Tufty” Evans helped the two parties mix it up. The piece was mastered in the Hamburg Master & Servant Studios, under the direction of Tom Meyer. The sound recordings were made from February to March 2008 in the Pleasurepark Studios in Berlin , the mixing took place in the Wispington Studio in London . Alone was published under the music label Warner Music Group Central Europe , published by Edition Pleasure Park, Edition Songs of Tro, Hanseatic MV and pH-Werk Musikverlag and distributed by Universal Music Publishing .

For the cover picture , Heppner was photographed on the one hand in a black and on the other hand in a white outfit while sitting on a stool . On the cover of the single, in addition to the artist name and album title, only Heppner can be seen. It is kept in black and white and consists of two different photographs that meet or are divided in the middle of the cover. On the left half of the cover you can see Heppner, who has turned his gaze to the left and is wearing a white shirt. On the right half of the cover he wears a black outfit. Both pictures were taken from the front, but the pictures are placed in such a way that Heppner's face cannot be recognized. The same artwork can be found in a different variant on the cover image of the album solo . The photographs are by Mathias Bothor and Dennis Neuschaefer-Rube. The design concept comes from HORT-Berlin.

Solitude was first published on September 5, 2008 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland . In addition to the radio version , the regular maxi single includes a remix version made by Paul van Dyk , as well as the music video on being alone as a B-side . In addition to the regular maxi single, a premium CD was released at the same time. This was released as a 2-track single and contains, in addition to being alone, a snippet and commentary on the album solo . The premium version includes a code that allows the album snippets to be downloaded for free. An exclusive digital version of the maxi single was available on iTunes , instead of the music video, it contains a second remix about being alone by the Hamburg DJ Azzido Da Bass .

background information

The single Aloneein is Heppner's debut single as a solo artist. He recorded his first song as a solo artist in 1998. It was the song Twelve and was to be found as the B-side on the maxi single for Die Flut . Otherwise, Heppner has already published various guest contributions, apart from his former band Wolfsheim , which were sometimes able to place themselves in the charts. When asked why this piece was chosen for publication, Heppner replied that today it is very difficult for an alternative / indie artist to be played on the radio. Only the music charts would be played up and down. When he was alone , Heppner was most likely to have the feeling that it would be accepted and played by the various radio stations. He also stated that he wanted to show people a completely different facet of himself with the song .

content

“To be alone, to be alone.
Today I'm just mine,
in familiar solitude.

Alone, Alone.
Today I am enough of myself
and that sometimes feels good - being alone. "

- Refrain, original excerpt

The lyrics to Alone is written in German. The music was written by Tom Albrecht, José Alvarez-Brill, Dior da Silva, Peter Heppner and Marc Kaschke, the text written by Heppner. Musically, the song moves in the field of synth pop . The song is based on a verse followed by the refrain . The first chorus is followed by a short bridge , which is finally followed by the repeating chorus.

The song is about the fact that it would do a lot of people to be alone with themselves and to think about themselves. He complains that some seek escape into society in order to run away from themselves and to avoid unpleasant questions about themselves and not to have to answer them. As a result, they often suppress the questions: who they are, where they stand and what they want to do with their life.

Music video

The music video for being alone was shot on Mexikoring and Überseering in City Nord in Hamburg . Heppner can be seen as a parkour runner throughout the music video . A short scene also shows a dancer who is jumped over by Heppner in front of a staircase. The music video ends with Heppner jumping into the sea at the end of a landing stage . The idea for the video was how to best visualize the urge to be alone afterwards. They came up with the idea of depicting someone in motion relatively quickly, because running alone involves being alone. You can only do something like that together to a limited extent. The professional stunts here were all done by a double , Heppner himself only played the scenes in which his face can be recognized. The total length of the video is 3:22 minutes. As before with Leben… I Feel You and Maybe? again directed by Hans Hammers Jr. II. The music video was produced by Luminus Film.

Reviews

The German-language online magazine laut.de rated the album with 3/5 stars. Artur Schulz is of the opinion that “exuberant cheerfulness” was never Heppner's trademark. But by being alone , he succeeded in “striking” against all clichés . Musically equipped with cheerful somersaults , flanked by "shimmering" and "shimmering synth cascades", the song dance in an irresistible manner through the "cold, glistening rigidity" of a glass garden - once sung about with Goethe's heirs .

The German-language online portal medienkonverter.de described being alone as an “actually great song”, but they complain about the “lack of depth”, which makes the piece an “average pop number that can be exchanged”.

The German-language e-zine Plattentests.de rated solo with seven out of ten points, with being alone as one of four “highlights”. The editors described the piece as a "catchy" single, which was easily recognizable as an "attempt at emancipation " and which was not unjustifiably marching straight into the charts.
