background information

God Smoked was one of the first pieces created for Heppner's second studio album My Heart of Stone . The song was written at the end of 2009. From January to October 2010, Heppner went on a club tour through Germany and Greece. The setlist consisted mainly of tracks from the debut album solo , as well as partly a compilation of older guest contributions and Wolfsheim pieces. With God Smoked he presented the only new piece during the tour. It was an integral part of the first encore.

Marks is often listed as the official guest singer for God Smoked . In its original album version, however, the song is only sung by Heppner. Marks can only be heard at the beginning of the official music video with a monologue.

content

The lyrics to God Smoked are written in English, translated into German the title means something like "God smoked". The music was written by Peter Heppner, Lothar Manteuffel and Dirk Riegner, the text specially written by Heppner. Musically, the song moves in the field of electro and synth pop . The tempo is 125 beats per minute . The song is built on three verses, a bridge and a chorus . It begins with the first verse, which is followed by the chorus for the first time. The same process occurs with the second stanza. After the second chorus, there is a bridge followed by the third verse. After the third verse the chorus can be heard again before the song ends with the repeating bridge. The stanzas always consist of four lines.

Heppner wrote the piece especially for the Howard Marks documentary. It is one of the few "commissioned works" that he has done in his career. In terms of content, the music for the documentation should be based on topics that Marks specified in one of his recitations. Heppner was assigned the topic of "Evolution". The song title God Smoked does not come from Heppner himself. This was already the title of the documentary, which Heppner enriched himself with. The song deals with the topic of drugs and the consumption of them.

“God smoked… obviously.
Look around, and what do you see? "

Reviews

The German-language online magazine laut.de rated the overall product My Heart of Stone with 3/5 stars. Kai Butterweck is of the opinion that the album is seldom “powerful and danceable”. Most likely on pieces like God Smoked , when “airy, light cheerfulness” spreads and “tripping rhythms” when “experienced synths ask to the dance floor”.

Andreas Schulz from musikreviews.de awarded 13 out of 15 points for My Heart of Stone , with Heppner saying that God Smoked was sometimes more “experimental”, but without foregoing “catchiness”.

The German-language e-zine Plattentests.de rated My Heart of Stone with seven out of ten points. With God Smoked , Heppner's “warm”, but sometimes “resigned vocals” meet “usual cold” electronics. That works splendidly with songs like God Smoked, which is based on vintage “ Violator ” sounds . Oliver Ding from the online editorial team highlighted God Smoked as one of four “highlights” on the album.
