Career

Karlsson made his international debut at the age of 20 when he started at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo . He jumped from the normal hill to 41st place in the individual competition. Over a year later, he started for the first time in the Four Hills Tournament . At the Four Hills Tournament in 1957/58 he jumped to 51st place in the opening competition on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf , before he achieved a significant increase in performance with 37th place on the Great Olympic Hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . After 38th place in Innsbruck , Karlsson surprisingly jumped 14th place on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen and was thus 3rd place in the overall ranking at the end of the tour.

In Lahti he reached a short time later at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1958, tied with the German Hugo Fuchs, 51st place.

With the Four Hills Tournament in 1959/60 Karlsson completed his most successful tour. He landed on the podium for the first and only time at the opening competition in Oberstdorf and was third behind Max Bolkart and Albin Plank and together with Helmut Kurz and Willi Egger . After mixed results in midfield in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck, he finished the tour with 17th place in Bischofshofen. In the overall ranking he reached 11th place.

In his last Four Hills Tournament in 1961/62 he achieved fifth place again in Oberstdorf. In the overall standings he was only 0.2 points ahead of his compatriot Harry Bergqvist in 17th place.

Karlsson ended his active ski jumping career when he started at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1964 . When jumping on the Toni-Seelos-Olympiaschanze in Seefeld in Tirol , he jumped to 35th place, before he reached 52nd place on the Bergiselschanze in Innsbruck.
