Helmut Kurz (* 1937 ) is a former German ski jumper and ski jumping trainer.

Career

Kurz made his international debut at the Four Hills Tournament in 1957/58 . Already in the opening competition on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf he reached a good 28th place, before jumping to 39th place on the Great Olympic Hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In Innsbruck and Bischofshofen he landed in 21st and 24th place, with which he reached 22nd place overall with 772.7 points at the end of the tour. At the Four Hills Tournament in 1958/59 he jumped into the top 20 for the first time in Oberstdorf and Innsbruck. He ran even better at the following Four Hills Tournament in 1959/60 . In Oberstdorf he was on the podium for the first time with third place. After two top 20 placings, he just missed his second podium as fourth on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen. In the overall ranking, he achieved the best result of his career with fifth place. Kurz was Bavarian ski jumping champion as early as 1959.

For the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, he took part in the elimination competition a few days before the opening ceremony, simply failed and was therefore not part of the Olympic team.

For the Four Hills Tournament in 1960/61 , Kurz did not succeed in building on the success of the previous year. In the end it was only enough to finish 32nd overall. In the following year he did not get beyond the 40th place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane in 1962 , Kurz jumped to 43rd place on the normal hill. He reached 33rd place on the large hill.

At the Four Hills Tournament in 1962/63 , Kurz succeeded for the first time in reaching a top 20 place in the overall standings. With 729.1 points he landed in 15th place. After a bad Four Hills Tournament in 1963/64 , in which he only started in Oberstdorf and after 25th place there at the end of the tour, he reached 70th place in the overall ranking, he was able to take part in the Four Hills Tournament 1964 / 65 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen surprisingly reached the second tour podium of his career with third place. Despite this success, he broke off the tour after jumping and was 17th overall. At his last Four Hills Tournament in 1965/66 , Kurz did not make it into the top 50 in any of the jumping competitions and then ended his active ski jumping career after the season.

After the end of his active ski jumping career, Kurz was active as a ski jumping coach and looked after the German national team, among other things. Kurz has been an honorary member of SK Berchtesgaden since May 16, 2002 .
