Limmathaus
The Limmathaus is a listed building on Limmatplatz in District 5 , Zurich , which was built according to the plans of the architect Karl Egender . With the nearby arts and crafts school, it is a testament to the “ New Building ” from the 1930s.
history
The Limmathaus was inaugurated on November 1st, 1931 after 16 months of construction. The initiator and builder was the “Volksgenossenschaft Zürich 5”, founded on April 26, 1926, which owned the building until the end of 2012 as the “ Genossenschaft Limmathaus Zürich”. On January 1, 2013, the property became the property of the newly established “Stiftung Limmathaus Zürich”, whose purpose is the maintenance and care of the building. The Limmathaus is connected to the Reformed Johanneskirche from 1898 by a side wing belonging to the “Reformed Church Community Industry” .
use
According to the statutes valid at the time, the house should serve as a place of encounter and cultural and socio-cultural exchange. Due to economic necessity, however, the house is now rented for commercial purposes, with the "Limmathaus Foundation" taking over the earmarking in a weakened form.
The aim of the cooperative was a house for the political and social life of the workers , but also for their everyday life. In addition, the company should generate a profit in order to secure financing. Therefore, in addition to the various halls, there was a restaurant and a «Postbureau» ( post office ) when it opened . In addition, a bathing facility with "bathtubs and showers" was operated, since in the 1930s many rental apartments did not yet have a bathroom. As a predecessor to today's hotel, a lodging house with rooms for single workers and employees was run. The post office has remained, but instead of the bathing facilities there are privately used training rooms in the basement. In addition, it still has three apartments and smaller office space.
X-TRA
Today, X-TRA Production AG is the main tenant and operates the hotel, the restaurant and uses the various halls as an event location for business events, corporate events, concerts and parties. In addition to its own party labels, such as the 2000 party, roller skate disco or lollipop party, the premises, including infrastructure and staff, are also rented to third-party organizers and external party labels and operated for them.
