The Backstage cultural center is a venue in Munich that has dedicated itself to the genre of alternative music. It is located at the Friedenheimer Brücke in the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg district . The backstage area includes the hall, the club, the factory and the beer garden.

history

The Backstage event project has existed since January 11, 1991 and is part of the youth culture initiative x-ray e. V. emerged. The aim is to remedy structural and content deficits in Munich in the areas of youth and scene culture.

Initially located at Graubündener Strasse 100 in Munich-Fürstenried / West, the Backstage was located on the Helmholtzstrasse site from 1993 to 2001. 18, 80636 Munich, from 2001 to 2007 Friedenheimer Brücke 7. The current location was previously at Wilhelm-Hale-Str. 38, due to a street name change it has been Reitknechtstr. 6th

The third, so-called "New Backstage" at the Friedenheimer Brücke (2001-2007)

The Backstage is operated by the Backstage Concerts GmbH with managing director Hans-Georg Stocker, who managed the construction purely through their own contribution. Economically (commercially) oriented working methods and structures (without public financial support) do not primarily serve the purpose of making a profit, but rather the guarantee of non-commercial offers, if possible.

In 1999 the American rapper Eminem gave his first concert in Germany in the backstage.

Upcoming renovation

Due to the construction projects around the backstage, the third location has been threatened with the end again and again since 2013. To compensate for this, new underground rooms were to be created, although this plan was not finally decided due to the high costs and the high time required. Since the deadline of almost 1.5 years was too short “to be able to plan properly [according to Stocker]”, he might not want to extend the lease at the turn of 2012. This would have resulted in an eviction.

After a compromise between Stocker and the property owner, the Backstage will remain in its current form in 2019. A new piece of land was bought directly to the east, which could be the new home of Backstage from autumn 2019.

The youth initiative “Backstage Preserve” is also trying to save the club in the long term. To this end, they have already organized flash mobs , and on a Facebook project page they appeal to those responsible not to close this club, which is important for Munich's youth culture.

Events

Concerts, dance events, film / cinema, festivals, sports broadcasts, discussion and social events, occasional cabaret, cabaret, exhibitions and markets take place in the backstage. Several events can run simultaneously in the different rooms on the 3,600 square meters, for example a sports broadcast in the hall and a metal concert in the club separately. On the other hand, there are all-area events that take place on the entire site or include several event areas. There are also regular special events and festivals such as the Free & Easy Festival.
