Once in a Lifetime ( English for, Once in a Lifetime ") is a song of the German synth pop - duo Wolfsheim . The piece is the first single from their fourth studio album Spectators .
Creation and artwork
The song was written by the two Wolfsheim members Peter Heppner and Markus Reinhardt. In collaboration with Jose Alvarez-Brill , the two also produced the single. The piece was mastered in the Hamburg Master & Servant Studios, under the direction of Tom Meyer. The single was released under the music label Strange Ways Records and distributed by Indigo . The recordings were made in the Belgian recording studio The Factory.
On the cover of the maxi single, as with Spectators and the subsequent single, Artificial Worlds - in addition to artist names and song titles - a part of the moon's surface with a view of the earth can be seen. Inside the CD you can find the quote “Goodbye Rainer D.”, the moon is depicted on the CD itself. The artwork comes from the Graphic Works Ottensen.
Publication and promotion
The first release of Once in a Lifetime on 16 October 1998 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland . In addition to the radio version, the maxi single includes an extended version of Once in a Lifetime , as well as the songs Heroin, She Said and Love Is Strange as B-side . When Love Is Strange is a cover version of the published 1956 original by Mickey & Sylvia. In order to promote the song, there was a live appearance on the RTL music show Top of the Pops .

In a 2003 interview, both Wolfsheim members stated that Once in a Lifetime was one of their own favorite songs alongside The Sparrows and the Nightingales , Kein zurück and Artificial Worlds .

Music video
The music video for Once in a Lifetime was shot on a beach. The video can be divided into two sections. For one thing, it tells the story of an older man. He is sitting on a beach and playing chess alone with himself . During the game his gaze often turns to the sea while he remembers his past. This is followed by scenes of a young woman playing with her child on the same beach and scenes of an exuberant party where he and the woman are guests. In a short sequence you can see the two sitting together alone at the party, whereby it is slowly faded out. Towards the end of the video the man can be seen playing chess with the woman and the child, but the woman and the child are slowly faded out and the man is alone again. On the other hand, the two Wolfsheim members can be seen again and again who are at different points on the said beach. While Heppner sings the song, Reinhardt accompanies him, who is equipped with an accordion . The old man's flashbacks are shown in black and white , the man himself and Wolfsheim are shown in color. The total length of the video is 3:43 minutes. Directed by Iwie Candy X07 from the German indie rock band Throw That Beat in the Garbagecan , the video was produced by EVF Video & Filmproduktion. To date, the video has over 4.3 million views on YouTube (as of April 2017).

Once in a Lifetime reached position 23 in the single charts in Germany and stayed in the charts for a total of 16 weeks. In Austria and Switzerland, entry into the charts has been denied to this day. After eleven years of band history and six previous single releases, the single is the first chart success in the official single charts. As a composer and songwriter, Once in a Lifetime is Heppner's second chart success after Die Flut , and it is the first for Reinhardt. As a producer, it is the first chart success for both Wolfsheim members.
Cover versions
- 1999: 883 , the Italian pop-rock band recorded an Italian version of the song entitled Almeno una volta for their fifth studio album, Grazie mille .
- 2005: DJ Baby Anne feat. Wolfsheim, the American DJ put the song on their EP Assault and Battery scratch.
