No Turning Back is a song of the German synth pop - duo Wolfsheim . The piece is the first single from their fifth studio album Casting Shadows .

Creation and artwork

The song was written by Axel Ermes and the two Wolfsheim members Peter Heppner and Markus Reinhardt. The single was recorded, mixed and produced by Andreas Herbig; Oliver Pinelli was at his side as co-producer . The mastering took place in the Hamburg Master & Servant Studios, under the direction of Tom Meyer. The single was released under the music label Strange Ways Records and distributed by Indigo . The mixes and recordings for No Back were made in the Tonofen Studio in Hamburg and in the Trixx Studios in Berlin .

On the blue-orange-black cover of the maxi single - in addition to the artist name and song title - a greatly enlarged part of a cell structure of a leaf can be seen. The artwork is reminiscent of the accompanying studio album Casting Shadows and comes from Graphische Werken Ottensen. A similar concept can be found later on Heppner's solo single What remains? again. The cell structure of a leaf can also be found here in a modified form.

Publication and promotion

No Back was first published on February 17, 2003 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland . In addition to the radio version, the maxi single includes a remix version of Kein Zurück and the songs And I… and Iou as B-side . The remix version comes from the collaboration between Klaus Knapp and Oliver Pinelli. In Iou is a previously unreleased recording Wolfsheim, which was previously released on any album of the duo. In addition to the regular maxi single, a promotional sound carrier was released at the same time . This consists of three titles and contains, in addition to the radio version and the aforementioned remix version, another remix by Mario von Hacht zu Kein Zurück . In order to promote the song, there was a live appearance on the RTL music show Top of the Pops .

background information

In 2018, Heppner stated in an interview with Radio Schwarze Welle that No Return was a song that he had written for a long time. According to his own statements, he was busy writing the lyrics for over three months every day. That had less to do with the fact that he hadn't found the right words to convey the content. His aim was to have a text at the end that you don't have to think about when you hear it. The text should take you immediately. No turning back should not take you through your “brain”, but “from your stomach to your heart”. The piece should remind you of experiences from your own life. That was very important to Heppner, but at the same time it was very difficult to express it with the correct and understandable words. Therefore, the text work dragged on over several months. It's a different level than simply conveying content with just a text. After the laborious writing process, however, it is all the nicer for him that many people react accordingly and that people often tell him that they associate something very personal with it. Many fans would also report to Heppner that they would like to have no return played at their funeral. In such cases he is very happy when he notices that everything has worked as he originally imagined it as an artist.

In an interview with mucke and more , Heppner stated that No Back was released as a maxi single because it had become the most important piece on the Casting Shadows album for the two of them. In another interview with earshot , both Wolfsheim members stated that no back is one of their own favorite songs alongside The Sparrows and the Nightingales , Once in a Lifetime and Artificial Worlds .

content

The lyrics to Kein Zurück are in German. The music was written by Axel Ermes, Peter Heppner and Markus Reinhardt, the text was written jointly by both Wolfsheim members. Musically, the song moves in the field of synth pop . The song is built up on three stanzas and a refrain in between and at the end of the song. The song is built on two stanzas and a chorus in between, as well as a repetitive chorus at the end of the song. The refrain itself occurred to Heppner spontaneously, it took two days before he had written it down in its finished version. Klaus Knapp can be heard on guitar as an additional instrumentalist.

The piece is based on the jingle from the audio publisher . Heppner himself described the connection between the song and the jingle as follows: “It's very positive what this publisher is doing - offering literature for people who have little time. The jingle gives the song a book character. It is the right introduction and the right introduction to literary works of all stripes . We used this effect for our very lyrical song. ”In the song, the themes of unfulfilled and already fulfilled dreams are dealt with. The song ends with the lines "Realize your dreams now and don't wait until you are too old for it", according to Heppner this is an intended last motivational line for all people who are not in a happy life situation.

“Always forward, step by step… There is no going back!
And what is now will never go undone.
Time is running out, what is done is done.
And what is now will never happen again. "

Music video

West entrance of the clinic

The music video for Kein zurück was shot in Hamburg-Langenhorn . In order to show the most everyday work situation or workplace atmosphere possible, the video plays in the laundry of the Asklepios Klinik Nord at the Ochsenzoll location . Individual exterior shots were also shot there. You can see a young woman (played by Esther Zimmering ) who is initially sitting at a table and staring into space. In the next scene you can see her marching briskly through the building, paying little attention to her surroundings. When she suddenly meets her superior, she fled, stormed to an apparatus and went about her work almost in an exaggerated panic. The supervisor comes to her with two security men who want to lead her away. Zimmering beats and kicks around, is able to tear himself away and tries to escape. On the run, however, she runs into a dead end , whereupon she is caught by the two security guards. The two lead her to her locker , where she changes her clothes and is escorted outside. Towards the end of the video, she storms outside through the stairwell , pulls a cyclist off his bike and hits it. The video ends with a close-up of Zimmering. During the video, the two Wolfsheim members act as employees in the laundry and can be seen again and again in the background at the various locations. The total length of the video is 3:50 minutes. As with It's Hurting for the First Time , Detlev Buck again directed. The music video was produced by Silbersee Film Productions. To date, the video has over 9.1 million views on YouTube (as of April 2020).
