No Happy View ( English for, no happy prospect ') is the debut album of the German synth pop - duo Wolfsheim .

Creation and artwork

All the pieces on the album were written by the two Wolfsheim members Peter Heppner and Markus Reinhardt, three in collaboration with Carlos Perón. All tracks were mastered and produced in Sound Studio N in Cologne , under the direction of Perón. The album was mixed, arranged and recorded at Musik Design in Aachen , under the direction of the producer trio Nine-O-Nine ( Jose Alvarez-Brill , Gento Navaho and Carlos Perón). The complete recordings had to be completed within three weeks due to limited funds. The album was released under the music label Strange Ways Records and distributed by EFA Medien GmbH Tonträger Produktion. On the black and white cover of the album you can see the two Wolfsheim members in addition to the artist name and album title. The picture was taken at Leisten Photodesign and was carried out by Willy Leisten and his assistant Mischa Haas. The inscription “You'll Never Like WOLFSHEIM” can be found on the back. A 24 × 24 cm booklet contains four black and white photos of Wolfsheim and French poetry.

Publication and promotion

The first release of No Happy View took place on May 12, 1992 in Germany, in the same year the album was released across Europe (including Denmark). Due to the emerging success in the late 90s, the album was released again in 1999. The album consists of eleven new studio recordings and was released on CD and vinyl at the same time . To promote the album, Wolfsheim went on the Zillo Festival Tour in 1992 and the following year on the Strange Ways Festival Tour in 1993 .

content

With the exception of one title, all lyrics are in English. Only the play Kissing the Wall was written in German. The song The Sparrows and the Nightingales contains the repetitive German-language line “Where is the leader who leads me, I'm still waiting”. Musically, the songs move in the realm of dark waves and synth pop . The album consists of eleven newly recorded tracks, three of which were already on previously released demo albums. The songs Kissing the Wall and It's Not Too Late (Don't Sorrow) (previously known as: Don't Sorrow ) appeared on the first demo album Any But Pretty . The song ... Can Manage ... as a solo version on the second demo album Ken Manage . With the new edition of ... Can Manage ... Wolfsheim were supported by the Fetish Park singer Marlon Shy. At Following You they were accompanied by Jose Alvarez-Brill as guitarist. The pieces are all sung specially by Heppner. The voices of Daniela and Melanie from the Stollberger Nightingales can be heard in the background. Gento Navaho was hired as an additional keyboard player alongside Reinhardt.

reception

To date, the album has not made it into any official hit parade. All that is known is that No Happy View sold very well for "underground conditions". Approximately 65,000 copies of the album had been sold by the end of 2001. Due to the huge success in the "underground scene", many print media voted Wolfsheim "Newcomer of the Year" after the album was released.

Trivia

On the follow-up album Popkiller , released a year later, there is a song entitled No Happy View .
