history

The buildings of Plant 2 were built in 1848 for a gas meter factory owned by the French Ed. Siry erected. In 1886 the expansion took place with the new building of Hall A. In 1888 the company was taken over by the company Schirmer, Richter & Co. After the GDR was founded , the area became public property in 1952 . The plant was part of the VEB materials testing machines Leipzig and was named "WERK II". After the fall of the Wall, the factory was briefly in the hands of the Employment, Qualification and Development Company Leipzig-Süd mbH (BQEG).

After the production facility was closed in 1992, it was used as a “culture factory”. The Leipzig cultural center Connewitzer Kreuz eV , later renamed WERK 2 - Kulturfabrik Leipzig eV , was founded, associations and projects settled in Werk 2. After submitting a usage concept in 1995, the city of Leipzig decided in 1996 to purchase the property and continue using it as a socio-cultural center. The creation of a 1000 square meter event hall (Hall A) began in 1996 with extensive construction work, the completion of which was delayed until 1999 due to planning deficiencies and additional demands in the approval process. In 1997 the association received a 20-year user agreement. In the same year, Hall E was destroyed by arson. Hall D was closed in 2001 under building law. In 2002, the architects Augustin and Imkamp created a master plan for the renovation of the property on behalf of the city's cultural office and the supporting association Werk 2. Hall D was rebuilt from 2009 and opened in September 2010. In 2012 the driveway to the open space was rebuilt and the courtyard was re-paved.
