The company was founded on August 11, 1881 by the mechanic Louis Schopper as a small craft business for the manufacture of scales for determining the weight of textiles, paper and grain in Leipzig. In 1890 the first universal testing machine for the strength testing of materials was developed. As the industrial demand for measuring machines increased, the company grew accordingly and in 1918 employed more than 250 people. Since further expansion was not possible in the previous premises in Arndtstrasse, the company moved to Bayrische Strasse 77 (from 1945 Arthur-Hoffmann-Strasse). By 1931 the number of employees reached 450. The field of work had expanded considerably and included the development and construction of materials testing machines and devices for the examination of metals , rubber , textiles , paper and grain . A significant part of the production was made up of strength testers for forces of up to 10,000 kg. Almost half of the production facilities were destroyed during the Second World War . On February 1, 1947, the company became the property of the Soviet Union and until August 1949 belonged to the administration of the Soviet joint-stock company (SAG) "Pribor". As a result of the dissolution of this company, the plant came to the administration of "Totschmasch", where it remained until the end of 1949. From January 1, 1950, the company was part of the administration of the SAG "Awtowelo" until it was converted into a state-owned company on June 4, 1952 and renamed VEB material testing machines Leipzig.

By exporting the products to the Soviet Union , the number of employees grew to over 1,000 by 1952. Over 75% of the production volume was accounted for by new developments, e.g. B. Machines for dynamic testing of materials. In addition, the product range has been expanded to include hardness testers and pendulum impact testers . The number of universal testing machines for forces of up to 1000 kN, which were exported before the collapse of the Soviet Union, amounted to more than 8,000, making VEB materials testing machines Leipzig one of the largest manufacturers of testing machines at that time. At the beginning of the 1980s, the delivery program was expanded to include the product line “Servohydraulic testing technology” for dynamic examinations and life tests.

With the economic decline of the Comecon countries, sales and the number of employees fell sharply. In 1990 the company was restructured and later converted into a corporation and renamed "WPM Material Testing Machines Manufacturing GmbH & Co. KG Leipzig". In 2004 the company merged with the TIRA Group and formed "TIRA WPM Leipzig GmbH". In 2006 the two companies separated again and since then the company has been operating independently under the name "WPM Materialprüfsysteme Leipzig GmbH". In 2008 WPM Materialprüfsysteme Leipzig GmbH took over the product range from EPL Egenolf Prüftechnik Leipzig, a testing machine manufacturer specializing in automotive technology. WPM Materialprüfsysteme Leipzig GmbH currently has around 20 employees and an annual turnover of around 2 million euros. The products are sold all over the world.
