Umbra et Imago ( according to : "Shadow and Image") is a band from Karlsruhe , which was founded in the fall of 1991 by front man Mozart. The original cast consisted of Michael Gillian, Nail, Torsten B. and Mozart. Except for Mozart, the original members left the group.

history

Umbra et Imago emerged in 1991 from the band The Electric Avantgarde, initially as a side project. Both bands existed in parallel the following year. For The Electric Avantgarde there were plans of a style change in the direction of Death Metal , which were discarded a short time later. The group was disbanded and years later revived under the name "Dracul" so that Umbra et Imago became Mozart's main project. In 1992 the band made their first live appearances. In the band, which was still electronically oriented at the time, there were repeated appearances by guest musicians, such as Peter Heppner von Wolfsheim . The group presented itself eccentrically throughout and became known for their shows that took up elements of BDSM . The debut album Dreams, Sex and Death was also released in 1992, and Infantile Spiele a year later .

Most of the pieces on the first two albums were over ten minutes long. Umbra et Imago made a remix of the song Erotica , which they called ZöllerMussEsSpiele Mix , referring to the DJ Michael Zöller, of the Bochum discotheque incident , in order to achieve better compatibility for scene discos .

In 1995 Michael Gillian and Torsten B. left the band, shortly afterwards also Nail and were replaced by Lutz Demmler and Alex Perin. With the change there was also a break in style. The band's music was much guitar-oriented and on the album idea of a vampire to hard rock extended elements. With the album Mystica Sexualis this change culminated in 1996 in the turn to metal elements . With the 1997 Maxi No God and No Love , elements of the New German Hardship emerged and Umbra et Imago were compared with bands like Rammstein .

In 2003 guitarist Freddy Sturz left the band. In 2010 the band announced on their official homepage that the work Opus Magnus , published in the same year, would be the last studio album in the history of Umbra et Imago for reasons of cost. Although the band said they didn't want to record any more sound carriers in the studio, they released the cover of the popular hit from the Nazi propaganda film The Great Love , From This The World Doesn't End as a single in 2011 in collaboration with Lex von Megaherz . Another album followed in 2015 with Die Immortlichen . In 2011 Lutz Demmler and Michael "Migge" Schwarz left the band after the anniversary concert. The anniversary concert was played with various guest musicians such as last instance member Rico Schwibs alias M.Stolz, the guitarist Matthias "Matze" Ambre , who formerly belonged to the ASP band, and the violinist Ally Storch (Ally the Fiddle) and in November 2011 as a live DVD published in three variants. In 2011 Freddy Sturz returned to guitar, and Erwin Schmidt has been playing bass since 2012. In October 2011 Ingo Römling replaced Lutz Demmler for a live performance in Dresden on the bass of Umbra et Imago.

Creation and appearance

Stage program at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2014

Umbra et Imago was founded as a concept band. The band concept was initially based in particular on the preparation of sadomasochistic fantasies. The band's early stage shows were also known for their sexual and sadomasochistic elements. After 2011, however, the band changed the show to more reduced performances without any major show elements.
