Ingo Römling alias Monozelle (born March 19, 1969 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German illustrator , comic artist and musician. In addition to his own comics , he draws artwork for record covers and magazines, but also advertising mascots and illustrations for school books. His 'digital illustration' combines traditional analog drawing techniques with photography , digital 3D graphics , and other digital graphics techniques. Römling is one of the most famous illustrators of the black scene .

Life

Römling was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1969 and grew up in Karben . Even his father loved reading comics and was a fan of Asterix . The young Ingo Römling learned to read with these notebooks even before starting school. He's been a fan of Spider-Man since he was a teenager . Drawing was always his favorite activity during his childhood. At the age of 15, Römling published his first own drawings with a small publisher. While he initially perceived art lessons in school as purely occupational therapy, he got a very good art teacher in the upper school, who was able to arouse his enthusiasm for the subject. He first came into contact with bass and synthesizers in music class, instruments that he still plays today. Since 1986 he was in contact with several publishers and agencies and received his first orders. In 1988 he graduated from high school.

In 1989 a music magazine hired him as a draftsman for funny pictures for the articles after he had presented his drawings to the editor. He admired the comics in Schwermetall magazine , especially those by Jean Giraud . In 1992 he began studying communication design at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences , where he took courses in life drawing, illustration and marker technology, among other things. After two years, however, he broke off to start his own business as an illustrator. In 1993 he took part in Guido Schröter's exhibition Comopoly in Hamburg. In 1994 Römling set up his own atelier for visual communication fantasyfactory and received the first major orders from large international companies, for which he mainly drew cartoons and caricatures . At this time, through his contact with the black scene, he also developed his typical style for which he is known today. In 1999, the agency SkaDialog introduced him as head of the areas of desktop publishing and final drawing one.

In 2001 Römling met Alexander Spreng alias Asp , frontman of the band ASP . As Asp is himself a comic writer, a long-term and intensive collaboration developed, together with Römling's debut album Varieté Obscur , the comic version of the Asp song of the same name. In 2003 he switched back to self-employment as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. Today the artist lives and works in Berlin. CHIP Online's best list portal Zehn.de voted Ingo Römling 8th among the most interesting record cover artists in the world.

Since 2014 Ingo Römling has been the first German authorized Disney illustrator to work on Star Wars comics. The Panini Publishing signed him for the comics of the animated series Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars Resistance . He alternates monthly with the British illustrator Bob Molesworth . The stories come from the pen of the British author Martin Fisher .
