Lacrimosa ( lat. , "The Tears") is the name of a music project that was founded in 1990 by Tilo Wolff, a Swiss resident, as a one-man company. The name refers to the lacrimosa in Mozart's Requiem .

history

In 1990 the first demo tape Clamor ( Latin for "shouting") appeared. Since Tilo Wolff could not convince a record company, he founded his own record label Hall of Sermon and recorded the first LP Angst under the name Lacrimosa . Since then, a harlequin has adorned the album cover as the band logo .

Since 1994 the Finn Anne Nurmi, keyboard player and singer of the Finnish gothic rock band Two Witches , has been a permanent member of Lacrimosa and has since contributed her own songs in Finnish and English.

Lacrimosa's biggest chart success was the 1999 album Elodia . It reached number 12 in the German charts.

At the same time Tilo Wolff worked with the thrash metal band Kreator and contributed the vocals for the song Endorama on the album of the same name .

With their single The Morning After , Lacrimosa was in the official single charts in Germany for four weeks , the highest ranking was 50.

On May 7, 2010, Lacrimosa released a double album called Schattenspiel , on the occasion of its 20th anniversary , which contains 18 previously unreleased tracks from the band's history.

Lacrimosa gave sold-out tours in Europe, Central and South America and worked for their albums with various well-known orchestras, for example the London Symphony Orchestra (Elodia) and the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg (facade / Echos) . Lacrimosa are an export hit outside of the German-speaking area and were ranked 9th in the international hit parade in 2003.

On November 6, 2015 Lacrimosa's twelfth studio album "Hope" was released. The subsequent UnterWelt tour took the band through Belarus, Russia, China, Mexico, Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. The tour continued in Germany in February 2016. At the end of the UnterWelt tour , Lacrimosa played as headliners on the 25th anniversary of the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in 2016 .

Surname

The name is derived from the last stanza of the liturgical sequence Dies irae from the 12th century, part of the Requiem . There it says: "Lacrimosa dies illa" , in German: "That day is full of tears" ( Latin lacrima , "tear"; lacrimosus , " full of tears"). The best-known setting of this text can be found in Mozart's last work, the Requiem (KV 626).

Music genre

The music style of Lacrimosa cannot be summed up in one category, as the band has been experimenting with new elements again and again, especially since Satura .

Clamor was the first demo tape from Lacrimosa, which originally had several titles, but due to lack of financial resources only relatively short tapes could be purchased. On the tape, of which 100 pieces were produced, there are only two titles (the demo versions of Seele in Not and Requiem ). In the demo version of Seele in Not , only a short melody at the beginning of the piece differs from the later album version.

In the debut album Angst , minimalist electronic sounds are Tilo Wolff's preferred design element. Such elements can still be seen sporadically on the follow-up albums Loneliness and Satura (e.g. in Tears of Longing , Part I and II).

These early works by Lacrimosa are also included in the New German Death Art . Tilo Wolff distanced himself from this in 1993 because he did not find himself or his music in this term. As an important reason he named u. a. the choice of instruments (e.g. the use of heavy metal guitars, which are unusual for dark wave).

“I can't do anything with the musicians or groups who count themselves to the New German Death Art. The only parallel I can draw to these groups is the use of German texts. "

- Tilo Wolff , March 1994

After rocking and metal- heavy e-guitar pieces had already been heard on Satura , Lacrimosa continued to develop their style of music on their fourth album Inferno . In addition to the English and Finnish texts presented by Anne Nurmi, there are also classical elements on Inferno .

The next album, Stille, contains the well-known title Stolzes Herz as well as a quarter-hour, again heavily classical track entitled Die Straße der Zeit . This song includes extensive choral passages, detailed orchestral arrangements, and a longer guitar solo.

Elodia is one of Lacrimosa's most successful albums. The first title - At the end of the silence - quotes a motif from the final title of the previous album . With this trick Tilo Wolff almost achieves a cyclical linking of the albums. The Sanctus uses the full text from the liturgical ordinarium Missae , which is recited by the choir. The boundaries between classic and metal are blurred here .

Façade is a concept album that rests on three pillars. The two corner numbers facade (1st and 3rd movement) are musically closely related. In contrast, the facade (2nd movement) forms an oasis of calm in the middle of the album. Also worth mentioning is the number Silent Words , on which Tilo's singing is only accompanied by the piano and a string quartet.

Echos begins with the purely classical piece Kyrie , again taken from the Ordinarium Missae , which was composed for choir and orchestra. Echoes is about “exploring the devotion to loving the other in order to understand yourself, and how to deceive yourself with these things. This is often no longer present in the crucial moments. Only when you look inside does you look outside. "

In Lichtgestalt Tilo Wolff set to music a Bible text: The Song of Songs from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians . The choir and orchestra are very present here again.

Sehnsucht is the first album that Wolff recorded in his own studio in Switzerland: “So when I was sitting at the piano, composing, writing and playing there, I recorded it directly if I liked something. I have prepared my studio so that I can record ad hoc accordingly. As soon as I noticed that something good was happening, I was able to press 'Record' and record. "

Revolution is Lacrimosa's heaviest album to date. On the album, among others, Mille Petrozza from the band Kreator and Stefan Schwarzmann from Accept play as guest musicians, who underline the metal-heavy character. Thematically, Wolff deals less with the political and more with a social revolution: “I think that we have created a society in which people and their real needs only play a subordinate role (...) We live in our rut, we are happy us over the flat screen TV on the wall (...) and hardly notice that there is an emptiness deep inside us that is secretly eating us up. "

The 13th studio album is entitled Testimonium and is a requiem in 4 acts, which was composed in memory of the many deceased artists in 2016 such as David Bowie and Leonhard Cohen . "Contemplative-calm, orchestral-bombastic and hard-metallic passages come together to form an obvious whole, from which Tilo Wolff emerges as a mature composer and arranger."
