Atrocity ("Atrocity", "Abscheulichkeit") is a German metal band with roots in death metal .

Band history

The band was founded in 1985 by Alexander Krull , Mathias Röderer, Frank Knodel, René Tometschek and Gernot Winkler under the name Instigators in Ludwigsburg . With this line-up, the band, already under the name Atrocity, recorded a demo in 1988 called Instigators . Before the release of the EP Blue Blood , which had some success within the scene, the band separated from Winkler and Knodel. Tometschek left the band a little later. Michael Schwarz became the new drummer, bass Oliver Klasen and Richard Scharf joined the band as guitarist.

Her first album, Hallucinations, with a cover by HR Giger was released in 1990. The songs were recorded in just eight days during a tour with Carcass at Morrisound Recording in Tampa , Florida , directed by Scott Burns . The next album Todessehnsucht stands out because of its pronounced classical elements, for example four opera singers were asked for help. For the following concept album, Blut , Krull was inspired by the landscape of Transylvania . Apparently he even found out that some of his ancestors lived in the Carpathian Mountains . Finally, the album is about vampirism . The new pieces were presented on the following tour with Obituary , Pitchshifter , and Crematory , with Alexander Krull's sister Yasmin on some of the pieces.

On the record Calling the Rain , released in 1995, the Krull siblings worked even more closely together. The calm melancholy style of this record is very different from the band's original death metal style. As a result, they played at a concert with Goethe's heirs in front of a seated audience. The next album was created in collaboration with Das Ich . The concept of Die Liebe was to rearrange pieces from the other band and then record them together. With the release of the album Willenskraft , suspicions arose because of the harsh lyrics that Atrocity was right-wing extremist. In response, the band destroyed a huge swastika during the song Willenskraft at Wacken Open Air 1996 . She went on tour with the bands In Flames , Totenmond and Heavenwood .

In 1997, Werk 80 managed to surprise both the fan base and critics. The disc contains only songs from the 1980s, including Tainted Love by Soft Cell , Shout by Tears for Fears , The Great Commandment by Camouflage and The Wild Boys by Duran Duran . This album was also the first to hear Liv Kristine's voice. She and Krull later married, their son Leon Alexander was born on December 18, 2003. The couple separated in 2016. After tours with Haggard , Joachim Witt and Oomph! Drummer Michael Schwarz left the band for the album, a replacement was found in Martin Schmidt. With him the band then recorded the tenth album Gemini , and they switched to the Motor Music label . In 2002 Alexander Krull and his bandmates founded the Mastersound Studio near Stuttgart. In addition to the band's own productions, many other rock and metal albums have since been produced in the Mastersound Studio.

In 2004, Atlantis followed with the single Cold Black Days . Atrocity's band members have formed the band Leaves' Eyes together with Liv Kristine since 2003 . In November 2007 Christian Lukhaup and Moritz Neuner left both bands. In February 2008 the album Werk 80 II was released , on which the burlesque model Dita Von Teese adorns the cover designed by Ingo Römling in a lascivious pose . In May, the drummer Nick Barker, who had only arrived in January, left again. In October 2008, Atrocity announced that a new drummer had been found. It is Seven Antonopolous from Los Angeles, USA. He also got involved with Leaves' Eyes.
