Crematory is a gothic metal - band from Germany , which in January 1991 in Westhofen was founded by drummer Markus Jüllich and guitarist Lothar Först.
history
After the founding, Gerhard Stass (singer), Marc Zimmer (bass) and keyboardist Katrin Goger, who was initially only a guest musician, joined the band. With this line-up, the first demo was created , which according to the band sold 1,500 times. The band's initial style was still deeply rooted in Death Metal , but there were already many Gothic Metal elements on the first demo.
Marc Zimmer then left Crematory and joined the band Mystic Circle under the pseudonym "Graf von Beelzebub" . Heinz Steinhauser took over the bassist position and with him the debut album Transmigration was created in 1993 , which was released on Massacre Records . Then he left the band again and was succeeded by Harald Heine.
The second album Just Dreaming , released in 1994, reduced the death metal elements. Videos for In My Hands and Shadows of Mine made it into the regular MTV program. They then toured with bands like Atrocity and Tiamat .
Illusions , the third album, was released in 1995. Crematory played at the out-of-the-dark festivals. Tears of Time , the band's third video, was also featured on the EP Is it true? (1996) used. With the title track, the band also released a song sung in German for the first time. In the same year, Crematory , the band's first album sung purely in German, was released. For the first time, the Top 100 of the German album charts were made.
After separating from Massacre Records, Crematory released the live album Live at the Out of the Dark Festival in their own production . Then a new company was found with Nuclear Blast . Awake , the fifth regular album, reached the German charts for the second time and rose to number 54 on the album charts. A cover version of Temple of Love (originally by The Sisters of Mercy ) became known in the club scene.
In 1999 they separated from founding member Lothar "Lotte" Först and continued with guitarist Matthias Hechler from Shit for Brains . The albums Act Seven (1999) and Believe represented the commercial high point for Crematory. In 1999, Nuclear Blast also released a kind of best-of album called The Early Years , which came in a box of three. This box contains all of the band's hits, as well as various remixes by artists such as Bruno Kramm ( Das Ich ) and Raymond Boyé ( U 96 , Scooter , Culture Beat ), as well as all music videos. After the anniversary tour in 2001, the band broke up.
After that, the musicians have got together once a song for a Metallica - tribute album take.
With the intervention of Nuclear Blast, writing for a comeback album began in 2003. In March 2004, the single Greed was released. The album Revolution then followed in May 2004. A live document called Liverevolution (2005) in CD / DVD form reproduced the comeback show.
Since the record deal with Nuclear Blast had expired, the band switched back to Massacre Records. On August 4, 2006 the second German CD Klagebilder was released and on February 1, 2008 the English-language album Pray was released , both recorded and produced in the coal cellar studio with producer Kristian Kohlmannslehner .
In January 2010 the studio album Infinity was released, in February 2014 the studio album Antiserum .
At the beginning of 2016, guitarist Matthias Hechler left the band after 16 years for personal reasons. His successor was Tosse Basler, among other things former singer and guitarist with Poison Asp and singer with Forty Shades . There was also a change on the bass, which was taken over by Jason Mathias (guitar at Palace) in 2016.
Tosse Basler left the band for professional reasons in autumn 2018. In December 2018, Connie Andreszka on guitar and vocals was announced as a replacement.
