Culture Beat is a German Euro Dance - band that (a rotating cast) especially between spring 1993 and autumn 1998 achieved great chart success.
Band history
The band was founded in 1989 by Torsten Fenslau . The first single Der Erdbeermund still contained spoken vocals by Jo van Nelsen , but the following productions for the album Horizon relied on the concept of “ rapper and singer ”, with Jay Supreme as rapper and Lana Earl as singer. The biggest hit of this lineup was I Like You .
For the second album Serenity , which was released in mid-1993, the line-up changed again: Jay Supreme remained rapper, but Tania Evans was now in the studio as the singer . With the first release , Culture Beat achieved their biggest hit to date: Mr. Vain (text: Nosie Katzmann and Jay Supreme, composer: Nosie Katzmann and Steven Levis) was number 1 in the charts in 13 countries.
After the release of the follow-up single Got to Get It , the producer Torsten Fenslau died in a car accident in the Darmstadt area , where he was then based. His brother Frank took over and released another album with Jay Supreme and Tania Evans in the fall of 1995, called Inside Out . Frank Fenslau didn’t work as a producer for Culture Beat on this album, but instead took on the duties of a manager . In the meantime, the album was produced by five different producer teams. Inside Out was very successful again, but didn't quite match the success of Serenity .
Evans left the project in 1997 in favor of a solo career. After Frank Fenslau split from Supreme at the beginning of 1998, the fourth album Metamorphosis was released in the early summer of that year with again a new line-up: Kim Sanders , who had recorded the hit Show Me a few years earlier with Torsten Fenslau , now took over the vocals. The sound of Culture Beat has undergone a major overhaul for Metamorphosis and transformed from dance to pop . The singles Pay No Mind , You Belong and above all Rendez-Vous were far more successful in the airplay area than in the sales charts, in which they again failed to match the success of Mr. Vain .
After Metamorphosis , the record company Sony separated from Culture Beat, whereupon they switched to Eastwest . The single Insanity was released there in the summer of 2001 , this time with Jacky Sangster on the microphone. Although the single was not a great success in Germany, it reached number 1 in Israel and the planned album was never released.
A moderate comeback then succeeded in mid-2003 : With a new edition of Mr. Vain - dubbed Mr. Vain Recall - Culture Beat landed another top 10 hit, both in the clubs and in the sales charts. In the revised version, the vocals were no longer from Tania Evans, but from Jacky Sangster again.
Shortly after the success of the new version, Sony Music released a best-of album with the original versions of the culture beat hits. After Mr. Vain Recall , it was quiet again about Culture Beat.
In early 2004 a promo single entitled Can't Go On Like This (No, No) was sent out, which was available on vinyl and CD from the middle of the year . In April 2008, Culture Beat's new promo maxi, Your Love (originally planned: I Love Culture Beat ) was released and reached number 1 on the dance charts in mid-May. In 2013 the CD The Loungin 'Side of by Culture Beat followed , on which u. a. Acoustic versions of previous hits can be heard.
In addition to Jacky Sangster, who is considered the front woman of Culture Beat, Tania Evans has also been appearing more and more recently with the former Culture Beat hits.
