Dark metal is a term that is often used for the music of metal bands in the gray area between Gothic Metal , Black Metal and Death Metal .

Stylistic features

Dark metal takes influences from black metal , gothic metal , death metal , doom metal and partly from the genres of the black scene known as black music or dark music , e.g. B. the New German Hardness , and is therefore not very clearly defined, which is why some bands are assigned to it that have little musical similarities. Often these bands played music beforehand that could easily be assigned to one of the aforementioned genres, and in the course of time they approached dark metal.

history

The term Dark Metal is mostly traced back to the title of the 1994 Bethlehem debut album , but was previously used in Katatonia's self-designation as "Sorrowfilled and harmonous Northern Dark Metal" . However, it was shaped primarily by Samael's 1994 album Ceremony of Opposites .

The expression became common as a genre name in the late 1990s, when many bands began to play music that moved away from the clearly defined genres. They could not be assigned to exactly one genre. Based on the mostly gloomy mood of the music of the aforementioned stylistic forerunners, the expression "Dark Metal" became common in the metal scene.

Overall, however, one cannot yet speak of the existence of a scene identity; common textual and ideological foundations cannot yet be identified. The representatives of Dark Metal are just a loose conglomerate.
