Samsas Traum is a German-language music project that was founded in 1996 by Alexander Kaschte in Germany. On March 1, 1999, exactly three years to the day after their founding, the band signed a record deal with the Trisol Music Group label .

The name of the band is derived from Franz Kafka's protagonist Gregor Samsa from his story The Metamorphosis , which begins as follows: “When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from restless dreams, he found himself transformed into a monstrous vermin in his bed.” This quote is used in the song Elite , which opens the debut album Die Liebe Gottes .

Band history

Samsa's dream at the Amphi Festival 2015

At the beginning, Samsa's dream consisted of three band members: In addition to Alexander Kaschte, who wrote music and lyrics almost entirely by himself, Kasche's partner at the time Simone Stahl and Johannes Welsch, who both played a vocal part on the debut album Die Liebe Gottes . After her first work, Simone Stahl left the band. At the beginning of 2001, shortly before the first tour, Johannes Welsch also stopped working due to health problems.

To the released album Oh Luna My which came saxophonist and clarinetist Daniel Schröder with the band and worked with the exception of Ipsissima Verba and Nostalgia since with every album. His frequent saxophone / clarinet solos and accompaniments helped shape the style of the band. Other guest musicians were also used on the following tours. Since the a.Ura and the Schnecken.Haus tour, Martin "Acid" Gutmann played the keyboard and Michael Puchala the guitar. Since 2006 Martin "Psycho666" Parzer has supported the band as the second keyboard player. However, these three left the band in 2007.

In January 2007 the production start of the album Sacred Heart - The Sword of Your Sun was officially announced. Moritz Neuner (including Leaves' Eyes , Atrocity , Abigor , Dornenreich , Angizia and Darkwell ) was supposed to take over the drums during the production, but the collaboration was ended prematurely in June 2007. Shortly afterwards Adrian Erlandsson ( At the Gates , ex- Cradle of Filth ) was introduced as the new drummer. He had already recorded his parts and would also support the band on their announced tours. Stephan Hinz and Alexander Machat took over the bass on the album; Michael Puchala played guitar solos, while Alexander Kaschte took care of the rest of the guitar parts himself.

In September 2007 Samsas Traum played a tour (Between Heaven and Hell) , during which they were supported by the bands Spiritual Front and Nachtmahr and they have already presented some songs from the new album. The album was released at the same time as the acoustic album When Black Rain on November 2, 2007.

On January 5th, 2008 the end of the collaboration with Adrian Erlandsson was announced, as Erlandsson had too many other obligations. Michael "Cain" Beck was introduced as the new drummer on February 10, 2008 and has been a permanent member of the band ever since. On July 20, 2008, the collaboration with Daniel Schröder was unexpectedly ended, but this was denied by Alexander Kaschte a little later. Until Alexander Kaschte confirmed the expulsion in an interview in April 2010, it was unclear for a long time whether Daniel Schröder was still a member of Samsa's dream.

On July 10th, 2009 the band's website announced the new Samsas dream album with the name for 13 years - Anti until death for October 30th, 2009. On the announced date, the album was released in a normal CD version as well as in a deluxe edition limited to 3000 copies.

On July 1, 2011, the ninth studio album was released instructions for being dead together as a double release with the album Amok of Kaschtes side project Weena Morloch . Kaschte himself was responsible for vocals, synthesizers, programming as well as rhythm and acoustic guitars on the release. As a further guitarist, Luca Princiotta played additional rhythm and acoustic guitars as well as the guitar solos. Michael Beck played the drums, Stephan "Gudze" Hinz the bass.

On September 2, 2011, Alexander Kaschte officially announced that Samsas Traum and Weena Morloch will give their last concert on October 1 at the Matrix venue in Bochum . However, both projects should continue and focus on studio recordings in the future. Shortly afterwards, on December 2, 2011, the album .Käfer.Maden.Würmer.Spinnen, which mainly contained remixes, was released . , which was divided into a Samsas Dream and a Weena Morloch CD. Before that, there was an online campaign by Kaschte where fans could recommend other bands to edit the pieces for the remix album. In January 2012 Viva Vienna, Vol. I , a 10 ″ record with live recordings from Vienna, was released. On March 9, 2012, the farewell concert in Bochum was published in the form of a live album under the name Unyielding-Unpredictable-Immortal .

With Asen'ka - A fairy tale for children and those who want to become one , the band's tenth studio album was released on November 23, 2012. The album was produced by André Alvinzi and Jens Bogren in Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden . Michael Beck played the drums, as on the previous album. Luca Princotta played the guitar solos. In contrast to the previous albums, the guitar preproduction was taken over by Jochen Interthal.

On September 27, 2013, Samsa's dream appeared again as part of a two-day concert. Guests included Vic Anselmo and the two former band members Michael Puchala and Daniel Schröder. Even if after this event there were rumors that Puchala and Schröder would become an integral part of the band again, both are now too involved in their own projects to continue to act as full-time members of Samsa's Dreams. However, they continued to appear as guest musicians at the “Acoustic Christmas Concert” initiated by Kaschte, which took place for the first time on December 21, 2013 in the KFZ Marburg , as well as at a concert of the “Asen'ka Tour 2014” in the Cologne underground .

Since June 2017 the band has been trying to produce the successor to Tineoidea via crowdfunding . This will be called Tineoidea II and will be an extensive album with orchestral accompaniment. Supporters of the crowdfunding campaign were offered the comics of the "Trauma Tales" series, in which the stories of individual samsas dream songs are graphically presented, as well as the exclusive album Scheiden tut weh . The campaign to fund the recordings was originally supposed to end on April 20, 2018, but has been extended by 30 days. The CD was released on November 2, 2018. As the production of Tineoidea II has been delayed, Samsas Traum have preferred the next studio album Kalk , which is to be released in late spring 2020 with the help of a private crowdfunding campaign.

Music style and musical development

Samsa's dream is characterized by the fact that the music is difficult to classify within stylistic limits. The band's musical style differs from album to album.

The albums often show a thematic and musical "red thread". The four albums Die Liebe Gottes , Tineoidea , a.Ura and das Schnecken.Haus and Asen'ka - A fairy tale for children and those who want to become one can even be understood as concept albums. The story told is reproduced in the first two albums mentioned by alternating vocals in various dialogues. The individual songs of a.Ura and das Schnecken.Haus are short stories that either tell a continuous story or can stand on their own.

Alexander Kashte's language adapts to the theme of the pieces, which in some cases knows neither content nor verbal taboos (examples are the songs Café Koma , FMNF - nicotine and mescaline , Once upon a time ... ). The messages are mostly sung, but also partly shouted and partly spoken; The possibilities for interpreting the texts are very diverse.

Musically, the band Samsas Traum can hardly be classified due to the clear development between the releases. While the debut album Die Liebe Gottes, described by Kaschte as a "Black Metal operetta", struck quite hard tones with a mixture of Dark Metal and Symphonic Metal , the second work already showed borrowings from the Neue Deutsche Hütze , which was not least due to clearly reduced screeching parts in Kashte's singing became noticeable.

On the third album Utopia , for the first time, analog synthesizers joined the metal riffs, but the style of the first albums remained recognizable. A considerable number of guest musicians from the black scene took on singing roles for the fourth album Tineoidea or: The consequences of one night - a Gothic opera in blood minor . Finally, Samsa's dream also made its commercial breakthrough with the a.Ura and the snail house , published in 2004 . This album was very controversial in fan circles because it struck unusually calm tones and was noticeably closer to chanson and songwriting .

Shortly after the publication of a.Ura und das Schnecken.Haus , Kaschte announced another style change. Two albums were supposed to come out at the same time: One of them an acoustic album, the other a black metal album. There was no further information for a long time , but some pieces from the acoustic album were played on the 2006 dance-on-the-blade tour.

The sixth studio album Sacred Heart - The Sword of Your Sun was not as varied as its predecessors after its release in November 2007, but primarily contains songs that follow a style with various influences. The influence of Black Metal becomes clear musically and vocally, but Kaschte also incorporates various elements from other styles such as Symphonic Metal. Often guitar lines can be heard creating a dark, melodic atmosphere. This is reinforced by symphony-like synthesizer tones. In terms of text, Kaschte takes up topics such as the destruction of humanity and the survival of nature (The Age of Trees) .

When black rain is an acoustic album on which Alexander Kaschte played all the instruments himself with a few exceptions (for example Daniel Schröder played the bass clarinet) and took over the vocals. Alexander Kaschte recorded it as a home recording in his private studio K. in Vienna and made it clear on the bonus CD of the album that, unlike Heiliges Herz, musical perfection was not important to him on this album. The texts are very poetic and sophisticated and have many metaphors and ciphers . In terms of the text and the musical-compositional structure (e.g. the instrumentation and song structure), there are clear influences from the songwriting genre , if the whole album cannot be ascribed to this genre. In an interview with the music magazine Orkus , published in February 2008, Kaschte stated that he wanted to emulate singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan or Nick Drake with this acoustic album .

After Kaschte the band's style for the 2009 anniversary publication for 13 years, however - Anti until death greatly reduced and towards heavy metal with rock 'n' roll had changed -Einflüssen, he returned two years later to instructions for being dead back to earlier sound with dominant synthesizers and symphonic elements, which also dominates on the follow-up album Asen'ka - A fairy tale for children and those who want to become one .

In 2015 the album Poesie: Friedrichs Geschichte was released, with which Samsa's dream dared a musical and content-related break to the previous albums. The sound became more electronic and contains elements of trip-hop , synth rock and rap-like chanting . In terms of content, the topic of euthanasia in the Third Reich is dealt with. The album was received controversially by fans and the press, but was also recognized as a work of art to be taken seriously.

Guest musician

Many guest musicians participated in the project from the beginning.

On the album Tineoidea or: The Consequences of a Night - A Gothic Opera in Blood Minor :

On the theme song of the best-of compilation Endstation.Eden (2004), Kaschte was supported vocally by Lucina ( Radical Romance ), while the acoustic interpretations on the first-edition single CD of Endstation.Eden by Myron and Tjorben (also Radical Romance) were recorded (here the best of was the bonus CD).

On the album a.Ura und das Schnecken.Haus :

On the album Asen'ka - A fairy tale for children and those who want to become one :

For the new release of Die Liebe Gottes , the songs dying love and Satanshimmel full of violins were re-recorded together with Diana Lueger ( second wife ) in 2005. She also took over vocal parts on the album Heiliges Herz , so z. B. with the title song of the same name.
